How to Fix “Unable to open JPEG file” issue in Windows?

Rename the file

  • An incorrect file extension can be one of the main causes that may not allow you to access the JPG file on your device. Renaming the JPG/JPEG file can help you fix the problem. Here’s what you need to do:
  • Select the JPG file that you cannot open, right click on it and tap the “Rename” option. Now rename the JPG file and accurately use .jpg as the file extension before saving it. After renaming the file, try previewing it using the Windows Photos app to see if you’re still having problems.

    • Update Windows Photo App

  • The Windows Photo app is the default photo viewer app on your device. If the application is out of date or corrupted, you may not be able to view any files and also encounter various other issues. Updating the latest version of the app will allow you to deal with errors, bugs and technical glitches.
  • To update the Windows Photo Viewer app, you will have to update the operating system as it is one of the default apps that come loaded with the update itself.
  • Tap the Windows icon, select Settings. Tap the “Update and Security” category.
  • Click on “Check for updates” button and wait a few seconds to see if any newer updates are available for your device.
  • If so, please update your device immediately and install the latest version of Windows on your machine.
  • And alternatively, to update the Photos app, you’ll have to go to the Microsoft App Store.
  • Open the App Store, tap the three dot icon located in the upper right corner, select “Downloads and updates”.
  • In the list of “Available updates”, make sure you see the Photos app. If an update is available, please update to the latest version of the Windows Photos app on your device.

    • Run SFC Scan

  • SFC (System File Checker) is a built-in Windows troubleshooter that allows you to check and fix corrupted system files and settings. The SFC tool replaces corrupted files with a cached copy and allows you to resolve system discrepancies quickly. You can use the SFC command to fix the “Cannot open JPG file” problem in Windows. Follow these quick steps:
  • Open Search from the Start menu, type “Command Prompt”, right-click and select “Run as Administrator”. Once the Command Prompt opens in admin mode, type the following command and press Enter.
  • The scanning process can take a while up some minutes. Sit back and relax until the SFC tool does the work of fixing corrupted system files and settings. Once the scanning process is complete, restart the device and try opening the problematic JPG file again to see if you still experience the same issue.

    • Restore default photo app

  • In our next workaround, we’ll make Windows Photos the default app for viewing digital pictures.
  • Open Settings > Applications. Switch to the “Default Applications” section in the left menu panel.
  • Scroll down and click “Reset” button.
  • Now set “Windows Photos” as the default photo app on your device.

  • If you are unable to open the JPG file in an application, try to consider other alternatives for loading the file’s contents. Right click on the file and select “Open with” option, choose any other application like Photoshop, Paint, Inkscape, etc. to open the JPG file.

    • Scan your device for viruses or malware
