While reviewing a document, the Track changes feature in Microsoft Word is a very useful tool for keeping track of your revisions, corrections, changes, edits, and even suggestions and comments. The Track Changes function of Microsoft Word is required when an editor or proofreader wishes to return a revised document to a client with all revisions clearly marked so that the client can accept or reject them.
Accepting or rejecting the revisions and changes made to the paper during the editing and proofreading processes is straightforward. On the right-hand side of the page of a paper with tracked changes, you will find several critical comments left by the editor or reviewer.
Enabling Track Changes in a Microsoft Word document allows you to make changes that are simple to track. The changes and revisions are similar to suggestions that can be reviewed, rejected, or made permanent through acceptance.
Steps to Track Changes in Microsoft Word for Mac
- Open your Microsoft Word document, and locate the Review tab.
- Locate the Track Changes icon in the Tracking panel; be sure that the Track Changes is switched off. If Track Changes is switched on, as in the screen shot below, make sure you click on the ON icon to turn this feature off. If you continue with the Track Changes feature on, your changes will be recorded.
- In the following screen shot, we have disabled the Track Changes feature. The next step is to place your cursor at the top of the document and click Next in the Changes panel. The cursor will advance to the first proposed correction.
- To accept the proposed change, click the Accept button. Once you click Accept, your text will be replaced with the proposed correction and the cursor will advance to the next correction.
How to Use the Track Changes Feature
You can choose how tracked changes display while working on a document by selecting Review > Tracking. Then, choose how you want the markup to display.
