The “We Couldn’t Connect to the Update Service” error code is related to either your internet connection or the Windows update services. Almost since Windows came out in 2015, people have been telling us about this error. Even people who used Windows 8 got this message. When most people downloaded the update version “1903,” they saw this message.
People said that the most common reason was that the update was stopped. If this is the case, you can always press the “Retry” button to see if this works. At one point, Microsoft said that its servers had a major problem that made it hard for users to get updates. That’s when this mistake was made.

Run Internet Connections Troubleshooter
Make sure that you can connect to the internet. If you’re not sure, open a website in any browser to see if it works. Next, go to Windows Settings, open the Troubleshooters page, and run the Internet Connections troubleshooter.
It will try to fix all of your internet connection’s problems. If you don’t think there’s a problem with your internet connection but Windows Update still gives you an error, you can also try changing your internet connection.
Change the DNS server
- Type ncpa.cpl in Search box and hit Enter. Right-click on your Network’s icon and select Properties.
- Select the Networking tab.
- Under This connection uses the following items, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
- Click Advanced and select the DNS tab.
- If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window.
- Click tthe OK button.
Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
If you’re using Windows 11, press Win+I to open Windows Settings, then go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. But if you’re using Windows 10, go to Windows Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
Microsoft has put different ways to fix problems with your computer on this page. Different problems can be fixed by using different Troubleshooters. You can find Windows Update Troubleshooter as one of them. Click the button that says Run the troubleshooter.
Make sure you have enough disk space
- Press Windows + E, then go to This PC from the left side.
- Check that there is at least 10 GB of free space left, and then try to reapply the update operation – as already described above.
Run a system scan
- Press Windows, then type cmd and choose the Run as administrator option under the result.
- Type or paste the following command and press Enter: sfc /scannow
- The scan will start – the process will take a while, depending on how many files are stored on your device. If there are issues, the scan will try to fix all the problems automatically.
- Restart your PC, and then retry the update operation
Disable the antivirus protection
If you use security software from a third party, you should temporarily turn off the antivirus protection. For example, the antivirus software might stop Windows from updating.
So, turn off these programmes and try the process again. Don’t forget to turn on your security programmes again at the end to keep your files and the Windows system you already have safe.
