At first glance, there isn’t much about the Flip 4 that sets it apart from the previous Flip 3, and that’s because there really isn’t much difference between them, except for some minor design changes like the phone buttons being more appropriately triangular for pause or playback. The Flip 4 is still rocking the iconic cylindrical shape with exposed passive bass radiators at both ends to match the rest of the JBL line-up. Nevertheless, there is one key difference that makes it a worthy upgrade from the previous model – water resistance.
While the fabric that wraps the speaker may look quite similar to the previous model, it is in fact now completely waterproof. IPX7 waterproof to be precise, meaning it can be submerged in 1m of water for 30 minutes, and it also shuts out dust, dirt and sand. So it’s no problem to take it to the beach.
The JBL Flip 4 is a portable Bluetooth speaker that comes in a variety of colours so you can enjoy it in your own unique style. It’s small and lightweight, so you can take your favourite tunes with you, and comes with a detachable carrying strap so you can easily attach it to your bag when you’re on the go. Furthermore, it is IPX7 grade waterproof, meaning it can be immersed in 1m of water for 30 minutes.
It is a lightweight and compact Bluetooth speaker, so you can take it with you wherever you go. It also comes with a detachable carrying strap so you can attach it to your bag. Furthermore, it has a waterproof rating equivalent to IPX7, which means it can withstand some water damage. It won’t get quite as loud as some other speakers on the market, so it’s better for small picnics with friends than boiling backyard parties.
The Flip 4 is a powerhouse on vocal-heavy songs, but it doesn’t always perform well in the midrange. This is evident in Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. Highs are reproduced well without sounding piercing. The soundstage is good, but not quite as effective as you would get from an omni-directional Bluetooth speaker. The Flip 4 was tested primarily with an iPhone 6s Plus, but we were also able to stream music and movies from a MacBook Air.
