For the past few months, gaming laptop manufacturers have been aggressively releasing new and updated models. Given that Intel, AMD, and Nvidia have recently unveiled all-new high-end hardware, beginning at the CES trade show in January of this year, it is a busy moment for the industry.
We’ve been fortunate enough to get our hands on a couple of the laptops based on all these new CPUs and GPUs that are now making their way to retail. Today, we’re going to discuss our initial impressions of AMD’s newest Ryzen 6000 series high-performance laptop CPUs. We’ll compare the company’s Ryzen 9 6900HX demo unit to the top-tier 12th Gen products from Intel by sending me an Asus demo unit.
The Asus ROG Strix G15 series is designed for gamers and esports enthusiasts that demand high performance but don’t require a thin or light device. It has a lot in common with the other members of the ROG Strix (2022) family in terms of hardware and design, which you may or may not like. Read on if you’re a student or home user seeking for a laptop that can handle demanding games for a few years while also being useful for daily productivity.
In terms of design, Asus is exerting every effort to make the G15 Advantage Edition shout AMD. The metal lid is decorated with the typical two-toned Strix pattern, with a diagonal line slicing through an all-black cover to reveal a dot pattern. When the computer is turned on, the ROG logo from Asus illuminates, but curiously, AMD’s emblem is also present. Although it is less noticeable and doesn’t light up, it is in the lower-left corner. AMD red and black make up the hinge.
That shiny cherry component has ” / R” carved on it; could it be for Ryzen, Radeon, or ROG? That cap is changeable, and two additional caps with the letters “ROG” on them in clear smoky and grey colours are also available if you’d like something a little less flashy. They click in with magnets and are easily detachable. In order to allow you to create and 3D print your own hinge caps, Asus has promised to post the blueprint on Shapeways. Similar design choices were used by Asus for the ROG Strix Scar 17 G733.
However, at this price, you won’t get the weight and slimness of an Ultrabook, so the ROG Strix G15 is quite a lump. It weighs a burdensome 2.3kg (with an additional 0.7kg for the power adaptor) and has dimensions of 354 x 259 x 27mm (WDH). The G513RW is part of the latest generation of ROG Strix G15 laptops, which are less concerned with being the greatest gaming laptops available than they are with establishing a balance between price, features, and performance. This device features a powerful processor, a sharp display, and all of the most recent connectivity, storage, and RAM standards.
