In 2023, the Google Pixel 6a is one of the most impressive low-cost smartphones available. This is primarily because, unlike cheaper phones, the Pixel 6a contains a powerful Tensor G1 chip. Not only is the Pixel 6a faster than other Android budget phones, but it also has an attractive design, a compact 6.1″ form factor, a light weight, and possibly the best camera in its price range. The dual rear camera system provides the familiar “Pixel look” for photos, but this time images are processed significantly faster after the shutter button is pressed.
At first glance, the Pixel 6a appears comparable to its siblings. It measures 152 x 72 x 8.9mm and is smaller than the standard Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, but retains the thick horizontal camera bar. This spans the entire width of the phone, although it is not quite as thick as on more expensive models. The front of the Pixel 6a is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 3, and it has an IP67 rating against dust and water intrusion, allowing it to withstand being submerged for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1 metre. The phone is available in three colour options: Sage, Charcoal, and Chalk.
The primary lens of the camera has been downgraded from a 50-megapixel (MP) wide-angle to a 12.2-megapixel (MP) wide-angle, which brings it closer (at least on paper) to the Pixel 5. You also get a 12 MP ultra-wide camera on the rear module of the 6a, while the front-facing camera is 8 MP. The Pixel 6a has the same Tensor processor as the premium Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. Google designed this SoC, which has a maximum clock speed of 2.8GHz. In addition, it features Google’s Titan M2 security co-processor.
The Pixel 6a has only 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage that cannot be expanded. This is in contrast to the majority of smartphones in this segment, which offer multiple RAM options. Standard communications protocols consist of Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and support for conventional satellite navigation systems. The phone has a 4400mAh battery and can charge up to 18W, but there is no charger included in the box. In comparison to the Pixel 4a, the Pixel 6a lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone’s stereo speakers sound fine and are well-balanced, but they are not the best in their class.
The Pixel 6a’s 4410 mAh battery can be recharged at up to 18 watts. You must acquire the appropriate adapter on your own; you can find one in the Google store, for instance. Google recommends using a charger that supports the USB PD-3.0 standard for optimal charging. However, you can use other chargers as well. The smartphone lacks wireless charging capabilities.
