Wireless charging is one of the key features that distinguishes the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition from the standard Kindle Paperwhite. Standard Qi wireless chargers are compatible with the Kindle Paperwhite; they are typically available for less than $15. Anker also manufactures a Wireless Charging Dock for the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition that is sold by Amazon for $29.99.
The charger is primarily composed of plastic. The canvas-made back of the dock, against which your Kindle would rest, will not scratch it. The bottom cradle is made of silicone rubber. The overall colour scheme is piano black, the same colour as the 11th Generation Paperwhite Signature Edition. When it is placed in the dock, a brief battery icon briefly appears on the screen before disappearing. The battery icon on the reader will indicate that it is charging and provide a percentage reading. Otherwise, the colour displayed on the dock will indicate whether the device is charging or fully charged. This dock can charge a device from 0% to 100% in as little as two hours. The docking station is powered by 7.5W.
This is comparable to a device manufacturer creating a specific type of protective case for a smartphone or a keyboard that is compatible with only one model of tablet. However, Amazon’s device emphasises that there are OTHER wireless chargers on the market that will NOT work with their new e-reader. On the Amazon listing page for the e-reader, there is a link to a strangely limited list of devices. The title of this limited list of chargers is “The following 10 wireless Charging transmitters are mechanically incompatible with Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition.” CE Link Limited, Samsung C&T, Shenzhen Injoinic Technology Co., Ltd., Belkin, FIT, Sdion, TYLT, and Novero dabendorf GmbH are also listed.
The list contains chargers with clamps (for smartphones) or dishes, each with hardware that would prevent the wireless charging coil from reaching the e-back reader’s panel. It should be intuitive. The power supply is of the flat variety that occupies two outlets unless the brick portion is positioned out of the way, and it has a unique connector that plugs into the charger so you cannot use other plugs—it lacks a USB connector like most wireless chargers. This charging dock is exclusive to certain markets, including the United States. It’s strange that Amazon Canada sells the Signature Edition but not the dock. Wireless Charging Dock, Power Supply, and Quick Start Guide are Included in the Box.
