If you’ve been looking for a webcam online in recent years, you’ve probably seen the Logitech C920 webcam in buying guides and lists of the best webcams on the market. This may be seen as a slight deception, as it is not the most powerful webcam you can buy today, but its legendary status is well deserved. Not only is the Logitech C920 still one of the best Logitech webcams available, it remains the top choice of all brands, despite being launched almost a decade ago.
There are dedicated streaming webcams such as the Razer Kiyo Pro and Logitech StreamCam that offer visual optimisation and smooth 60 frames per second, but for those not looking to get started on platforms such as Twitch or YouTube, the benefit is costly and unnecessary for everyday webcam use.
[content-egg-block template=offers_logo hide=price]The design is certainly not going to knock anyone’s socks off, but its bar design is very recognisable, to the point where it seems other brands have taken inspiration and applied a similar look to their products over the years. The camera lens is positioned in the centre of the ‘bar’, with an LED light that turns blue when the camera is in use, and microphones on either side.
Although the webcam is more than eight years old, its performance is impressive (if a little embarrassing) compared to the latest competitors. As with many cameras, it struggles immensely in low-to-medium lighting conditions, with images being grainy and dark. Attempts to use software settings to brighten the image in low light will result in a reduced frame rate. However, in sufficient light, this product looks very good for the price. Several lights are reviewed on this website, including the Elgato Ring Light, the Key Light Air and the LimoStudio LMS 103 Lighting Kit, which are used in the following shots.
With the C920, the ‘pro’ in ‘pro webcam’ is immediately apparent. Video quality is shockingly clear, with crisp detail and vibrant colours – the webcam on my Dell laptop looked dull and grainy, and even the video recorded from the C920 was more impressive than the live image from my laptop cam. Audio was clear and full, with minimal ambient noise.
