In this article we will discuss about how to add conditional questions in Google Forms. Making a form with conditional logic makes it easier to do things like get customer feedback or plan a surprise party for a friend. Because conditional questions change based on how you answer other questions on the form, they’re more efficient, less likely to make you tired of filling out surveys, and a lot less of a pain to do.
When people fill out a survey or form, you don’t always need them to answer every question. For example, let’s say you sent out a form to get people to sign up for an event. If someone says they can’t make it, it doesn’t make sense to ask how many guests they’ll be bringing.
On the other hand, there are times when you may want to find out more about a respondent based on what they say. During a customer satisfaction survey, if someone says they are unhappy, you may want to find out why they are unhappy. You can also go to the official Google support site to know more information.

Add Sections
So, we’ll make different sections with questions that lead to other questions. We’re going to use an example to help explain the process and make it easier to understand. For example, you might want to make a form for people to sign up for an event, but there will be more than one event. Based on the events, we will make different sections, such as –
- Section 1: User Details followed by an event to be attended,
- Section 2: Dance Event,
- Section 3: Music Event,
- Section 4: Art Event.
Adding sections will help you organize your form, and you can set the form to show or skip to the sections and questions based on the answers. So the first part (default present) will be gathering information about the participants, asking them which event they want to go to, and guiding them there. First, let’s add sections, then we’ll add conditional questions.
- Click on the ‘Add Section’ button on the menu to the right of the question field.
- On adding the new section – Name the section (compulsory) and description of the section to make more clear (optional)
- Now add questions into that section related to that particular event registration or feedback, or whatsoever.
- Then do the same thing for the other two or more sections.
Setup the Form
Using templates for a few cases is the best way to start using Google Forms. Google Forms has templates for things like creating a feedback form or an RSVP form. You can start with a blank form or quiz if you don’t want to use one of their templates.
- Go to Google Forms, click on the ‘Template Gallery’ or select ‘Blank Form/Quiz.’
- If you have selected a template, then you’ll find pre-added few questions that you can modify, besides to show nested questions in google forms we will have to first add different sections.
- Before that, you can configure settings and customize your google forms, though you can also do it towards the end.
Add Conditional Logic
Now that we’ve finished making each section, we can use the conditional dropdown feature. Follow these steps to add if-then questions to Google forms.
- Choose the questions you want to use conditional logic on, click on the symbol “” to see your choices, and then choose “Go to section based on answer.” Here, we chose the question, “Which event will you go to?”
- After you choose an option, you’ll see dropdown menus next to each option.
- Then, you’ll have to choose from the dropdown which section you want people to go to when they click on that choice.
Preview the Output
Once we’ve added Google Forms conditional questions and made sure they work, it’s time to check the results. To see what the Google form will look like, click the “Preview” button in the navigation bar at the top.
- Fill in the details, and select any of the options from the section 1 question – ‘Which event will you attend?’ We have selected – ‘No I will not be able to attend any’ option
- It will directly lead us to the ‘Sorry to hear that’ section i.e, the last section.
- Once, you are satisfied with your form, send it via email, copy the link, or embed HTML to your webpage.
