We’ll demonstrate how to update your Garmin watch. To get the most out of your Garmin watch, you need to make sure that it has the most recent software. Staying up to date gives you the latest features and makes sure that your device, whether it’s a Forerunner, Fenix, Vivoactive, Venu, Epix, or something else, doesn’t have any small bugs that could be slowing it down. No matter what devices you’re using, it’s usually a good idea to make sure they’re running the latest software.
This can give you access to new features, make your devices more secure, or fix bugs that were bothering you. Garmin often adds new software features and widgets to its older watches after they have already been released for its newer watches. So it makes sense that you’ll want to make sure your Garmin wearable has the latest build and, on more advanced watches, the most up-to-date maps. There are different ways to do this, so we’ll show you how to update your Garmin watch in a few different ways so you can pick the one you like best.
How to Check Your Current Internet Software Version
It’s easy to check your software version on a Garmin:
- Go to the “Settings” menu on your Garmin.
- Select “About.” Here, you’ll find your Garmin’s Unit ID (serial number) and the software version it’s using right now.
- If you want to make sure you have the latest version, you can do a web search by typing the name and model of your device followed by “updates and downloads.”
- Then, go to the official Garmin website and look at the results.
- After you find it, you can compare the results to the software version you have on your device to see if you have the latest one or if you need to download it.
Setting Up Automatic Software Updates
If you haven’t already, the first thing you need to do is make a Garmin account, download the Garmin Connect app, and connect the device to your phone. After you connect your device to the Garmin Connect app, your software should be updated automatically. This means that any new updates will be sent to your Garmin device automatically. But if you’re not sure if this is turned on or if you accidentally turned it off, you can set it up by doing the following:
- Just click “Settings.”
- Click on “Start/Stop.”
- Tap “System.”
- Tap “Software Update“; it will be at the very bottom.
- Turn it on.
You have now set the software to update itself. Now, whenever a new update for your device comes out, it will be downloaded and sent to your device automatically. Most likely, every time you update your device, it will have to start over. This is normal, so you don’t need to worry about it.
Manually Updating Your Software
If you want to update your software on your own, you need to make sure that automatic updates have been turned off. This is because automatic updates are turned on by default. After that, follow these steps to update the software on your Garmin device by hand:
- Just click “Settings.”
- Click on “Start/Stop.”
- Tap “System.”
- Click “Software Update.”
- Whenever there is a new update, it will show up here. You will be able to choose “Install now” and see how long the update is expected to take.
- Click “Select.”
Now you’ve updated the software on your Garmin by hand. If there are no updates right now, nothing will show up under “Software update.” Since Garmin updates its software from time to time, you should check for updates every 3 to 4 months to make sure that your device has the most recent version.
Update Using Garmin Express
With Garmin Connect, you can update the software on your Garmin device without plugging it in. But this isn’t the only choice you have. Garmin Express can also be used to keep your Garmin device up to date. How does it work? Garmin Express is an app that you can get for your Mac or Windows computer and install on it. You can update your device by connecting it to your computer with a USB cable. Here are some steps to take:
- If you don’t already have the Garmin Express app on your computer, go to https://www.garmin.com/en-US/software/express/windows/ and download it.
- Use your charging cable to link your device to your computer.
- Follow the steps to get your device to connect. Note: If you don’t already have a Garmin account, you’ll need to make one.
- Since software updates are set to happen automatically by default, Garmin Express will send them directly to your device if there are any available.
- If you choose to update the software on your Garmin device by hand, any updates that are available will show up on the screen.
