Today, in this article we show you how to Use Microsoft Word to Write Essays. The old-fashioned way of writing an essay with a pen and paper is not completely out of style. But if you want to write, proofread, and format your essay well at the same time, you need a sophisticated method that will let you do all of these things on time so you can write a professional essay from scratch.
No matter how you feel about the Microsoft Word program, you can’t do your job without a word processing tool like it. It’s something you get to use every day at work. You can also go to the official Microsoft Word support site to know more information about this.
It’s not hard to figure out how to use the program’s basic features. Most of us can use a word processing program after we’ve learned the basics, but we don’t take the time to learn the program’s most important features. Most people don’t need that feature as long as they can type, search for and replace words, and use the format margins.
Ways to Use Microsoft Word to Write Essays
Page Breaks
Instead of using the space bar, you can insert a page break by pressing Ctrl + Enter or by going to the “Insert” tab and clicking “Page break.” If you use the Enter key, the new page may not start where you want it to if you make other changes to the document later.
Indentation
Go to the “Home” tab and then the “Paragraph” menu to indent a paragraph (not by using the space bar or tab key). Select “First line” under “Indentation.” It will be set to 1.27 cm by itself.
Set Language
Click on “Review” and then the “Language” group. Click on “Set Proofing Language” under the “Language” drop-down menu. Here, you can change the Spelling & Grammar checker to use “English (Australia)” as the language.
This will help you find some, but not all, American spellings that should be changed to Australian spellings when you check your spelling. It is best to set your language again at the end by selecting all of your text and then setting the language right before you do a spell check.
Formatting
Don’t use fancy fonts, borders, or underlining for headings or cover pages. It’s not needed and doesn’t follow the rules for formatting in universities.
Footnotes
Go to the “References” tab and then click “Insert Footnote” to add a footnote. If you do it any other way, your footnotes won’t be linked or formatted right.
Word Count
To check your word count, highlight the text you want to check (your essay, but not your bibliography or reference list), then go to “Review” and click on “Word Count” in the “Proofing” group. Uncheck the box that says “Include text boxes, endnotes, and footnotes.” This way, you’ll know how many words your paper has, not counting the words in your references.
