Apple has begun rolling out its 2026 software updates across its platforms, headlined by iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, the company announced on September 14. The releases introduce Siri AI, a rebuilt version of Apple’s voice assistant that enters beta in English, alongside a broad set of Apple Intelligence features and new parental controls.
WatchOS 27 and visionOS 27 are part of the same release wave, and Apple says the updates extend beyond AI features to performance, connectivity, search, and design refinements across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple TV.

Siri AI Enters Beta With Personal Context and Onscreen Awareness
Siri AI is the most substantial change in this release cycle. According to Apple, it is an entirely new version of Siri powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence, designed to understand personal context across messages, emails, and photos, and to answer questions about what is on a user’s screen or retrieve current information from the web.
The assistant is also tied more deeply into the system. On iPhone, a Siri mode in the Camera app can act on what the camera sees Apple cites splitting a bill and paying friends through Apple Cash as an example, a feature limited to eligible devices in the United States. Visual Intelligence lets users on iPhone, iPad, and Mac ask Siri about onscreen content, while Vision Pro users can search and take action by looking at their surroundings and speaking.
Write with Siri generates or refines text from a spoken description, and a new dedicated Siri app syncs conversation history privately through iCloud, allowing a chat started on an iPhone to continue on a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, or Vision Pro.
The beta launches in English only. Apple says support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish will arrive in October.
Apple Intelligence Expands in Photos, Safari, and Phone Calls
The new Apple Intelligence capabilities extend to several stock apps. In Photos, Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an upgraded Clean Up tool add editing options, while Image Playground now generates images in a wider range of styles, including photorealistic output. Apple says images created or edited with AI carry metadata identifying them as such, and that support for Google’s SynthID standard will arrive in a later software update this year.
Safari gains tools that automatically group open tabs by topic, notify users of website changes such as restocks or price drops, and generate custom extensions from a written description. A Call Context feature surfaces relevant details – a confirmation code or reservation number, for example: when a user calls a business.
New Parental Controls and a Redesigned Screen Time
Apple has rebuilt its parental controls around a new setup flow for child accounts that applies age-based safeguards systemwide. Parents choose exactly which apps a child can access from the start and can expand that list gradually. Ask to Browse requires parental approval before a child visits a new website in Safari, and Communication Safety, which previously screened for nudity, now also detects and blocks gore and violent content in shared images and videos.
Screen Time has been redesigned to show average device usage and top apps at a glance. Parents can set daily time allowances across categories such as Entertainment, Games, and Social Media, informed by what Apple describes as guidance from clinical and child development experts, and use Schedules to control app access at different times of day.
Performance, Connectivity, and Design Refinements
Apple’s performance claims are based on internal testing conducted in July and August 2026 on prerelease software. The company says apps launch up to 30 percent faster on iPhone and iPad, recently captured photos load up to 70 percent faster, and AirDrop transfers are up to 80 percent faster. On iPad, file browsing and transfers to an external USB drive are up to five times faster, while Apple Vision Pro connects to Wi-Fi up to three times faster after a reboot. Apple’s testing notes state that results vary by device, configuration, and usage.
Connectivity changes include smoother transitions between cellular and Wi-Fi on iPhone and iPad, and Messages will no longer hold up outgoing texts while large photos or videos upload in low-bandwidth conditions. Search in Spotlight, Photos, and Mail is more comprehensive, and Mail uses a new ranking system for Top Hits.
The Liquid Glass design language introduced last year gains a slider in Settings that lets users adjust the interface from ultraclear to fully tinted, and app icons have been redrawn to appear sharper.
Smaller Updates Across the Ecosystem
- iCloud Shared Albums support full-resolution photo and video sharing, and Apple says it is easier for Android and Windows users to join and contribute.
- The Health app’s Cycle Tracking adds perimenopause and menopause support, including notifications about cycle deviations.
- AirPods gain a custom EQ setting, and AirPods Pro 3 can sync heart rate data to Apple Watch through GymKit.
- Apple Maps adds an enhanced Flyover view that combines aerial imagery with AI-generated detail.
- Apple Watch adds Smart Stack widget suggestions, a one-handed tap gesture to open widgets, and Workout Buddy support without a nearby iPhone, now available in Spanish as well as English.
- Vision Pro users can convert panoramas into spatial scenes for use as personal Environments, and a new Thórsmörk Environment features a dynamic Icelandic aurora.
- Apple TV gains lossless audio for Apple Music, a redesigned Podcasts app, and expanded text-size options.
Availability and Regional Limits
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI run on a defined set of hardware: iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone Duo, iPad mini with A17 Pro, iPads with M1 or later, Macs with M1 or later including the MacBook Neo, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with a compatible iPhone. Siri AI is not available to users under 13.
Regional availability is uneven. Mac and Vision Pro users in the European Union can access Siri AI when set to a supported language, but it will not be available initially on iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS in the EU. In China, Siri AI and the new Apple Intelligence features are unavailable while Apple works through regulatory requirements.
Apple also confirmed that features relying on server-side models including Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts are subject to daily usage limits that vary by feature and demand. The company says expanded access to these features will be offered for a fee at a future date, a move that places a paid tier around some previously free AI capabilities.
