Overview

The market for premium 15-inch laptops produced to be “desktop replacements must be alive and nicely since the Dell XPS 15 2016 model fills exactly that role. There are super-ultra slim laptops with wonderful battery life. Or these fancy pants 360-degree-rotating-screen hybrids. It’s been around for a while now. However, I’m still extremely impressed each time I see it make an appearance on a newer model. Put it next to some other bog standard laptop, and it shines, actually standing out on the shop shelf.

Specifications

Design

These notebooks usually incorporate the newest processor technology, optional dedicated graphics, and have chassis designs built with more expensive supplies to convey the looks and quality of a premium, luxury product. This Dell XPS 15 2016 model supports that legacy thankfulness to its base plate combined with a carbon fiber chassis and rubberized palm support to enhance your comfort whereas typing.

Keyboard and Trackpad

While you’d expect from Dell’s premium XPS range, the XPS 15 borrows lots of the similar design cues as its gorgeous little brother, because it uses the same aluminum chassis and carbon fiber composite keyboard and palm rest as the XPS 13.
The trackpad, where some Dell’s have been a bit of a letdown in the previous, is also glorious. The enemy of all laptop users  ‘accidental inputs’ where your hand or your arm touches the trackpad by accident.

Display

We got a chance to test out a Dell XPS 15 equipped with the top-shelf 15.6-inch 4K IPS touchscreen. It boasts 170-degree viewing angles, spectacular 350 nits of brightness, and support for 100 percent of Adobe’s RGB color range. The latter makes the screen good for enjoying high-quality content, as well as for serious picture and video editing, or graphic design work.

Audio and Graphics

Whereas the re’s no attempt to ramp-up the bass with “woofer” drivers, the treble is clear, and the mid-range is highly effective, natural-sounding (if slightly boxy) and detailed for laptop audio system. It’s a carefully considered, coherent efficiency. Excellent work.
Wherever you opt for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU such as on our review units, you will get a machine with 2GB of video RAM that’s able to edit pictures and videos quickly. You may even be capable of doing some pretty serious gaming too.

Hardware and Performance

We only have the most basic spec load-out here. Which means an Intel Core i5-6300HQ quad-core CPU, 512 GB SSD, and 16GB RAM. These specs make XPS 15 a speedy workhouse that can handle multiple tasks with ease. Dell UHD XPS 15 scored 13,502 on Geekbench 3 benchmark test. While the 1080p model of XPS trailed close behind at 13,023.

XPS 15’s 512GB SSD supports NVMe (non-volatile memory express) data transfer and offers 254 Mbps data transfer rate. It was less than half the speed of the MacBook Pro’s 512 GB SSD (636 Mbps) and also behind the Asus’s UX 501 (508 Mbps). Toshiba’s P55 brought up the rear with a rate of 212 Mbps from its 512 GB SSD.

The Dell XPS 15 uses performance throttling even with the lower-end spec, because the Dell XPS 15 is relatively quiet almost all the time. The fans do run each time the laptop is used. However, they’re intensely quiet, and not annoyingly loud when-when the system is working flat-out. The entry-level model is powered by an Intel Core i5-6300HQ, has Nvidia GeForce 960M graphics and comes with a 1TB HDD with Windows 10 installed on a 32GB SSD.

Battery Life

The battery life from our review unit of the Dell XPS 15 laptop is mediocre at best. That is closer to what we expect from a gaming notebook than an ultraportable, however, that is sensible given that the specs of the XPS 15 are closer to a 15-inch gaming laptop than a MacBook.

The Dell XPS 15 starts at $1,000 for a 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 display, Intel Core i3 CPU, 32GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, 500GB HDD. Our $1,800 model has an Intel Core i7-6700HQ chip, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and Nvidia 960M graphics, whereas the $2,100 model tosses in a UHD touch screen on high of that.

The Dell XPS 15 is an incredible laptop and a no-brainer buy for anybody who wants a laptop that exists primarily on a desk at home or in the office. It’s cheaper and added incredibly spec’s than a MacBook Pro.
The 4K screen is seriously impressive to look at whereas the color accuracy makes it ideal for anybody working with graphics. We’d gracefully buy one of these for ourselves, and that’s about the highest praise we can provide.
