Overview
Samsung’s crazy portable Notebook 9 actually impressed us last year with its beautiful thin and light-weight design. Now the same laptop is even better for business, with upgraded for quicker performance and speedier multitasking. Still more spectacular is the fact that the 13-inch version is even lighter than final year’s model, despite the efficiency upgrades. A 15-inch mannequin is also available. I went hands-on with the 13-inch Notebook 9 and almost couldn’t believe how lightweight it feels. Also, more striking is the fact that it doesn’t feel flimsy, regardless of its barely-there magnesium alloy construction.

Design
The Notebook 9 Spin is considered by a slim design that measures 12.39 x 8.69 x 0.59 inches and weighs simply 2.98 pounds. It’s one of the thinnest models we examined that many competitors measure thicker than 0.6-inch and on the lighter end of the color at less than 3 pounds. It’s also flexible, thanks to a 360-degree hinge. Opening the lid exposes a black, Chiclet-style keyboard, as well as a deck that sets your wrists a few millimeters above the keyboard for better ergonomics. That bottom bezel on the 15-inch display is quite large, however, the edges on the side and top of the screen are slim sufficient not to be noticeable.
Keyboard and Trackpad
The Notebook 9 has curved keycaps for comfortable typing, eliminating strain throughout prolonged utilization. You can also simply and efficiently activate useful capabilities with convenient hot keys. The touchpad is made of glass and features an AF coating that’s pleasing to the touch.
Display
This laptop has a 13.3-inch display with 3200 x 1800 resolution, the top resolution available on any model we examined. It’s also bright, with a normal screen brightness of 350 nits, and has good colour accuracy. The Notebook 9 also has a 98% sRGB rating and wide viewing angles for a snug viewing activity from various positions. The “Infinite Bezel” design maximizes screen space, giving you with a 0.2″ bezel and providing it an excellent, premium look. The low-reflective screen gives the 350 nits of luminescence with unobstructed viewing even in full sunlight. Moreover, the 180-degree hinge enables you to share your screen with multiple folks.
Audio and Graphics
The speakers on the bottom that create the sound are simply adequate. I discovered that the bass was a little weak, and I needed to show the volume just a smidge louder. The laptop performed far better sound on my desk. Its graphics efficiency wasn’t fairly as spectacular, scoring simply 37,000 factors in 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited and 837 factors in 3DMark Fire Strike, however, it’s more than sufficient for the average user who needs to stream videos and maybe edit a few photos. There isn’t any extra graphics card. That means you will get the Intel HD graphics aka shared graphics.
Hardware and Performance
Although you may expect a laptop this thin and lightweight to also be light on performance, the 13.3 has an Intel Skylake with 6th generation Core i5 clocked at 2.3 GHz. That’s a particular change over the Intel Core m5 in the new fall Samsung ATIV Book 9. This Core i5 is a mainstream CPU that’s well able to handle common workloads for school and work like MS Workplace, Photoshop, software development for small to medium dimension programs, streaming video and occasional full HD video modifying. Although the 15.6″ Notebook 9 comes with a Core i7-6500U, the re’s no i7 option for the 13.3″ model. That said, they’re each dual core 15 watt CPUs with the same architecture and Intel HD 520 graphics, so the efficiency difference is small.
The machines have 8 gigs of RAM soldered on the board. Therefore it’s not upgradeable. Samsung sells the 13.3″ model including a 256 gig M.2 SSD, and our 15″ shipped with a 256 gig Samsung Drive. Each uses the SATA3 rather than the newer and sooner PCIe interface. The re’s currently just one 13.3″ and one 15″ configuration available, as described above. Due to the Notebook 9’s slim profile, any heat generated by the machine’s parts has few places to flee. However, somehow, the system manages to maintain its cool, making for a consistently comfortable experience. The Samsung Notebook 9 comes with a fair amount of utility and diagnostic software, as well as a few pieces of bloatware. The only preloaded third-party apps are Flipboard, Candy Crush Soda Saga, and Twitter. The Notebook 9 comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
Battery Life
The Notebook 9 is compact and light-weight, measuring in at 0.6″ skinny and 2.8 pounds light, giving it an ideal travel partner. Its battery is rated to last up to 12 hours on a single charge so you’ll be able to leave the adapter at home and nonetheless use it for a full day. Additionally, it features a quick charging capability that can provide you 2.3 hours of performance with as short as 20 minutes of charging.
Configuration Option
The 15-inch Samsung Notebook 9 that we examined includes a 256GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, a Core i7-6500U, and a 1920 x 1080p display, for $1,199. A 13-inch version of the Notebook 9 has the same storage, RAM, and display resolution as our review model, however, it features a Sixth-generation Core i5 processor and prices $999.99.
Conclusion
The Samsung Notebook 9 Spin ranks with the top ultrabooks you’ll be able to buy. It has a slim and flexible 2-in-1 ultrabook design, powerful efficiency and decent battery life. Whenever you want a laptop that lasts all day and does double responsibility as a tablet, it’s a nice different to our top-rated system. There are sufficient ports to make this a sensible main machine, although some do require dongles or micro cables. Still, the 12″ MacBook has simply ONE port and the Dell XPS 13 will ship you on a sometimes frustrating hunt for simply the right USB-C adapters.
