Devolo Wi-Fi 6 Repeater 3000 review

A Wi-Fi extender is a good choice if you only need to improve the Wi-Fi in one or two rooms. But Devolo calls them “repeaters” rather than “range extenders.” We’ve always liked Devolo’s Magic products because they work with both Wi-Fi and PowerLine and can reach even the annoying dead spot in the office at the back of our building. But Magic products can be quite pricey because they use PowerLine technology.

PowerLine also has wired networking features that not everyone will need. So, as a cheaper alternative, Devolo just came out with the WiFi 6 Repeater 3000, which is a more traditional range extender that doesn’t use PowerLine and just focuses on Wi-Fi routers. As its name suggests, the Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 3000 works with Wi-Fi 6 and has a top speed of 3Gbps.

Which is faster than the more expensive Magic products (it’s actually 2976Mbps, but manufacturers always round these numbers up with lots of zeroes). We’re also happy to see that Devolo has updated its Home Network app to make it easier for new users to get started.

The Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 3000 looks like most range extenders do. It looks like a big white plug that you can just plug into a wall outlet in any room where your Wi-Fi might need a boost. The device is big because it has four antennas built into it to boost the Wi-Fi signal.

There is also an LED status light on the front that shows how strong the Wi-Fi signal from your main router is. This will show you where to put the Repeater, which will help you set it up. On the bottom of the Repeater is an Ethernet port that can connect a wired device like a laptop or gaming console. Even though this Ethernet connection is wireless, the Repeater still connects to your main router through Wi-Fi.

Too bad, though, that the Repeater doesn’t have a pass-through socket that lets you plug other devices into the mains so you don’t lose the use of that power socket. We’ve also said that Devolo’s Home Network app is hard to use for people who have never used a repeater or range extender before. Like most wireless extenders, the Repeater 3000 is a big white box that plugs into a wall outlet. Since it’s pretty big, you probably can’t plug anything into a socket next to it. This is an issue, especially if you want to use the WPS button on the right. Still, the Gigabit Ethernet port is on the bottom, so it doesn’t get in the way.

We also like that the front has a four-segment signal strength indicator. The Repeater 3000 also has a great management portal, which is another great thing about it. It has a lot of technical information about your main and extended networks, as well as connected devices and networks nearby. A Clone function tells the repeater to copy your router’s network name and password.

So devices can connect automatically without having to be set up again. There is also a mesh mode that lets multiple Devolo extenders work together and share settings. The Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 3000 is both a repeater and an access point. You must connect it to your router via Ethernet to use it as an access point.

Devolo says it can strengthen your Wi-Fi in five minutes, and while that’s the best-case scenario, it’s not too far off. Then, you can use Devolo’s Home Network app to connect, choose your network, enter your login information, and get online.

You can also save time by letting WPS finish the setup for you. I had no problems or delays when I set up both the Repeater 3000 and the Repeater 5400. You can find the best place for your repeater by looking at the LED signal meter on the front of the unit.

However, starting up and fixing the connection takes a while, so this is a pretty time-consuming process. Still, the repeater works well to keep speeds the same once you find the best wall outlet.

Both outside and inside bands can be linked to the Repeater 3000. Crossband mode uses the 2.4GHz band to talk to the router, saving the 5GHz band for connecting other devices. It’s a good idea, but it slows things down because the 2.4GHz radio is only a quarter as fast as the 5GHz radio.

In-band mode is better because both the client and the router can connect through the 5GHz radio. The Repeater 3000 works well to make Wi-Fi work better in this setup. With just my D-Link R15 Eagle Pro AI router, we got average download speeds of 41 Mbits/sec in the bedroom and 44 Mbits/sec in the kitchen.
