DJI Osmo Action – Introduction
DJI is perhaps best known for making drones, pods, and cameras, but this is the latest gadget, the Osmo Action is an action camera that makes every effort to provide you with everything you need to document your busy life. The first action camera of DJI is fighting, with a set of prices and features that should grab the attention of GoPro.
Neat features, such as a small front-end screen and HDR video, make it stand out and compatibility with rival accessories will make the transition easier. But there are glaring omissions, including GPS, limited voice commands, and basic social sharing options. If you are looking for an alternative to GoPro, Action is a wise choice.
DJI Osmo Action – Design
Osmo Action is a well-designed gadget. Its waterproof metal frame is associated with adherent and textured rubberized sides for a pleasant feeling in the hand. It is also easy to press the Action buttons and generate a satisfactory click back.
So, even if you wear gloves, you can trigger it and start recording without wasting much time. Slide the flap on the left side of the action to reveal a tight section containing the USB-C port and a microSD card slot. At the base is a battery component, at the front of the camera, which is accompanied by a small 1.4-inch square screen. At the rear, the entire screen is equipped with a 16: 9 LCD screen, 2.4 inches, offering a pixel density of over 300 PPI – nice and clean.
In the design department, the Osmo action is more useful than the GoPro Hero camera line. It has a hard gray plastic case, compared to the sleek and satiny feel of the last GoPros. Ok, the action cameras must be launched, but that does not mean that they can not look good (and feel good) by doing them. The lens on the outside is circular and surrounded by a removable metal ring. The battery rests on the underside, with two internal clasps that hold it in place.
DJI Osmo Action – Features
When you are about to descend into a steep alpine descent or dive underwater, the last thing you want to do is change the settings or wait for your camera to start. Even when turned off, the DJO Osmo Action can start shooting in seconds by pressing the shutter button or using the “start recording” voice command.
Navigating the Osmo Action menu system is simple via the 2.25-inch touch screen; slide your finger across all four sides of the screen to display a different menu. Although we have very little to complain about the excellent user interface of GoPro, the refined experience of using the Osmo action gives it a leg up on the competition. The Mimo app was a little risky for us. It’s not bad at all, but it does not have the same level of editing option as GoPro companion apps.
DJI Osmo Action – Battery
The Osmo Action’s battery takes only 90 minutes to charge fully and lasts almost as long when you’re shooting at 4K30 when RockSteady is activated. The battery is also removable (unlike the GoPro), which allows you to carry spare parts and enjoy long hours of filming. Both devices can be recharged using a backup battery if you need to increase the on-the-fly rate.
DJI Osmo Action – Camera & Video
The Action’s camera is equipped with a 12MP sensor associated with a wide angle lens. With its 148-degree field of view and f / 2.8 aperture, it rivals the Hero7 Black front. With its slightly more extensive battery of 1300mAh, its life is a little longer. Video is captured at resolutions ranging from 720p to 4K, 4: 3 or 16: 9, and 60 fps. All settings except 4K, 4: 3, 60 fps also support DJI’s proprietary RockSteady image stabilization system. The Action also features eight slow motion videos, 12 MP photo support with manual exposure control, time-lapse video, and more. The sleight of the camera must be the front screen. Activated by a double tap of the central touch screen, this means that you can vlog to your heart’s content and get your framing right.
As far as video quality is concerned, the DJO Osmo Action impresses on most fronts, although its strong point is vlogging. Unlike the GoPro, regardless of the resolution, it measures all the content of the faces by default, making it the focal point from exposure. The 4K sequences captured on the Osmo Action contain a lot of detail and can be enlarged in post-processing by about 20 to 40% for Full HD content without much degradation.
The dynamic range is fair, and we found ourselves ignorant of the HDR mode, mainly because it disables the EIS system. Low light performance is noisy and noisy. Their quality is very similar to that of Hero7 Black. So when the light goes down, take your smartphone.
DJI Osmo Action – Conclusion
The GoPro Hero 7 Blackout is not to be cracked, but the overall performance of Osmo Action and its lower price make our new action camera the most powerful. Its front screen is a real boon for vlogging, and in most situations, its video quality and stabilization match GoPro’s flagship product (without surpassing it).
Its fast operation and neat interface make it the most user-friendly action camera. In some areas (live broadcast, hyperlapse quality, accessories), GoPro still has the edge, but if you need a new waterproof camera for summer adventures, Osmo Action is the best.
