After the Hero 11 Black came out, the Hero 10 Black is now the middle child in GoPro’s family of action cameras. Even though it doesn’t have as many features as GoPro’s top model—most notably, it doesn’t have an 8:7 sensor that’s great for shooting vertical videos that work well on TikTok—it may now be the best value. Even though the GoPro Hero 9 Black is cheaper, this model is better overall because it has a GP2 processor.
Even though it was called the GoPro camera Hero 10 Black, it wasn’t one of those GoPros that was a big step forward for the series. For example, when the GoPro Hero 5 Black came out with waterproofing without a case or when the GoPro Hero 7 Black added HyperSmooth stabilization, these were bigger steps forward. Instead, the Hero 10 Black fixes and improves most of the new features we saw on the Hero 9 Black.
It also adds a few new shooting modes and makes it easier to use. This makes it one of the best video and action cameras you can buy right now. The Hero 10 Black is waterproof up to 10 meters and has the same 23MP 1/2.3-inch sensor as its predecessor. But the new GP2 processor is what gives it most of its new skills.
New shooting modes, like 5K/60p, 4K/120p, and 2.7K/240p, are the most important of these. During our review of the GoPro Hero 10 Black, we found that the last two are fun slow-mo modes that are great for social media cut scenes or b-cam footage. This is especially true since GoPro’s updated Quik app will do some of the editing for you.
GoPro Hero10 Black review: Design and features
The Hero10 looks exactly like the Hero9, nor could anyone who had to buy new accessories. GoPro gave the Hero9 a big makeover. It now has a display on the front, a lens cover that can be taken off, and a new way to attach mounts and accessories.
The DJI Osmo Action was the first to have a front-facing screen, which helps a lot when you’re trying to frame yourself in a shot. The Hero10 has a shutter/record button on top. I like that you can press it even when the camera is off and it will turn on and start recording.
The power button is on the left side, and the battery, microSD card slot, and USB-C charging port are behind a door on the right side. We wish you didn’t have to open the battery compartment to reach the USB port. If you want to keep the camera plugged into an external power source, it’s just one more thing to worry about. You can buy this camera from its official website.
GoPro Hero10 Black review: Performance and Battery
You can’t say enough good things about how the new GP2 processor makes the user experience better. If you have used the Hero 9 Black, you know how slow it can feel to swipe and tap. All of these problems have been fixed for the Hero 10: it’s quick, the touch screen works well, and the processing times for photos and videos are faster.
The GoPro Hero 10 Black interface is the same as what we’ve seen on other GoPro cameras. Horizontally swiping through the interface lets you switch between Photo, Video, and Timelapse modes. Swiping up brings up the media on your memory card, and pulling down brings up the settings for the camera.
Also, the new GoPro has better connection support. First, there is 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi, and now you can use a wired connection to transfer photos and videos from your Hero 10 Black to your phone or tablet. With support for Hero 10 to USB-C or Lightning connector, this cuts transfer times by up to half.
GoPro also brings back both live streaming and streaming from a Webcam. Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and RTMP, which can be plugged into other services, are all supported streaming services. Also, GoPro.com’s streaming service lets you watch higher-quality feeds, but you have to sign up for the GoPro Subscription to do so (opens in new tab).
GoPro Hero10 Black review: Display
Aside from the faster frame rates and higher resolutions made possible by the Hero 10 Black’s processor, it is mostly the same as the Hero 9 Black. Except for the bright blue logo, the design is the same. The size of the battery, the lens mount, and the front and back touchscreens are all the same.
It will work with all of the add-on Mods that GoPro made for the Hero 9, like the Media Mod, which gives you a shotgun mic, an HDMI out, a 3.5mm mic jack, and a couple of cold shoes, and the Max Lens Mod, which gives you an ultrawide-angle lens like the one on the GoPro Max 360-degree camera.
GoPro Hero10 Black review: Image quality
The noticeable improvement in image quality is nice, but the GP2 chip’s ability to speed through any task really stands out. Since the GP2 is the first new GoPro chipset since 2017, we’ll likely see a few more GoPros with it, as well as software updates, in the coming months. In fact, software updates after the launch of the HERO 9 Black made it much better, so it’s not too much of a stretch to think that the same will happen with the HERO 10 Black.
GoPro Hero10 Black review: Price
A bundle option is available for vloggers. The Creator Edition comes with the Media Mod, the Light Mod, the Volta grip, and the camera, so if you want to start a YouTube channel, you can buy everything you need at once. Without a GoPro Subscription, it costs $784.95, but like the Hero10, you get a discount if you add the GoPro service. Buying the bundle with the GoPro service brings the price down to $581.96.
GoPro Hero10 Black review: Final words
Compared to the HERO9, the GoPro HERO10 Black now has two times as good performance and a frame rate two times as fast in all of the higher resolution video modes. While reviewing film and using the live preview function on the front LCD screen, it is now twice as smooth as before, and the touchscreen interface of the rear LCD is wonderfully snappy.
