The Motorola Edge 40 is a sophisticated Android phone that we have had a lot of fun using throughout the course of this review. It has a sleek design, cameras that are up to par, a battery that lasts a long time, and quick charging, and it is offered at a price that is comparable to other smartphones. If the Motorola Edge 40 Pro is competing against the most advanced smartphones on the market, then the standard Motorola Edge 40 competes against the smartphones‘ more affordable younger brothers.
It is smaller than the Motorola Edge 40 Plus, has fewer powerful components, and a less stunning set of cameras, but at £529 (about $690 / AU$1,015) it is an attractive bundle, especially when compared to the Edge 40 Pro’s price of £799 (roughly $1.045 / AU$1,535). There are some features that are missing from this phone that you would expect to find on a flagship model that costs far more money, such as a dedicated zoom camera, variable refresh rate display, or 12 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM).
Motorola Edge 40 Specifications
The flagship smartphone from Motorola is back, and it also brought us the Edge 40. A few corners had to be cut, but it still has a stunning design, a screen that is incredibly fluid, and a processor that is lightning fast.

Motorola Edge 40: Design and Display

In their last few versions, Motorola Edge smartphones have become thinner and more narrow. The Motorola Edge 40 builds on this and makes it even better by giving it a vegan leather back that feels very high-end. Few phones will be able to look as good as the Edge 40, and it definitely makes the device look more expensive than it actually is. Also, as was said above, the phone has an IP68 grade, which means that it is very resistant to dust and water.
Motorola says that the Edge 40, which is only 7.6mm thick, is the smallest phone in its lineup. I have the Nebula Green version, which makes the device look even better. The two cameras on the back of the phone are set up vertically, and the two LED flashes are on the side. The phone also has stereo speakers driven by Dolby Atmos and a USB Type-C port at the bottom. The Motorola Edge 40 is a clear design winner because it feels very light in your hand, has a high-quality finish, and has been tested for longevity.
Motorola Edge 40: Cameras
The Motorola Edge 40 has two cameras. The main camera is 50 megapixels, has an f/1.47 aperture, and supports optical image stabilization (OIS). Also, there is a 13-megapixel camera with an ultra-wide lens that can also take macro photos. The Edge 40 comes with a 32-megapixel front camera for taking selfies.
The main camera gets good details, but sometimes it makes the picture too sharp. Also, the colors are a bit too bright to make the picture look lively. Even though the software tries to improve the processing’s dynamic range, it doesn’t always work. When taking close-ups, the main camera has a shallow depth of field because of its wide aperture.
Motorola Edge 40: Software

Android 13 will power the Motorola Edge 40, and the company promises two major software updates and three years’ worth of security patches. As a result, this phone will not receive updates as quickly as the flagship model. Motorola’s software is as streamlined as what Google could offer with the Pixel 7, and I appreciate that. This phone has the potential to compete with that Google product.
That’s why you won’t find any carbon copies of your favorite Google apps and services here. Facebook, Mistplay, and Word Trip are among the preloaded options. Dolby Atmos, Family Space, Moto Secure, and Motorola Notifications apps are all included.
Motorola Edge 40: Performance
The MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chipset powers the mobile device. This upper-midrange processor outperforms rivals like the Pixel 7a’s Google Tensor G2 and the Samsung Galaxy A54’s Samsung Exynos 1380 in benchmark tests.
When compared to other flagship phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, like the OnePlus 11, I did not find the Edge 40 to be noticeably inferior in daily use. Never once did it freeze up on me, and it ran Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt 9 smoothly.
Motorola Edge 40: Battery Life
The Edge 40’s 4,400mAh battery is impressive, considering the phone’s incredibly compact profile. The Edge 40 has a larger battery than the Edge 30, but when compared to the standard 5,000mAh devices from Realme or Xiaomi, it may feel insufficient. With moderate use, the device’s screen-on duration can be extended to roughly six hours. Although, you do get 68W charging, which can fully charge the phone in under an hour, so it’s almost good enough. Wireless charging at 15W is an impressive extra feature of this phone.
Final Words
The Motorola Edge 40 is an upgrade from the Motorola Edge 30, yet it seems suspiciously like an updated version of the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion. The price tag may reflect the fact that it is now competitive with the flagship Edge 40 Pro. It’s priced to compete with premium smartphones without sacrificing too much in terms of specs or features, and it does just that. This phone performs admirably: it’s speedy, it charges quickly, and it doesn’t lag. The Edge 40 deserves serious consideration if you’re in the market for a small, powerful smartphone.
Motorola Edge 40 review: The good and The bad
The Edge 40 is quite well made, and it gives off the sense that it is both costly and sturdy.
The Good
- Versatile main camera performance
- Fast 68W TurboPower charging
The Bad
- Can overheat when playing games
Questions and Answers
The Eclipse Black model (seen above) is available with a vegan leather finish, but we anticipate that the Nebula Green leather option, as well as the more traditional Lunar Blue with an acrylic back, will also sell well.
On the rear of the device, there are three cameras: 50 megapixels (wide), 13 megapixels (ultrawide), and 32 megapixels (wide) for selfies. Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by) and IP68 dust/water resistance (up to 1.5m for 30 minutes) are both included in this gadget.
