Panasonic Toughbook 40: Design
The term “fully rugged” is important because it puts the Toughbook 40 in a class above semi-rugged systems like the Dell Latitude 5430 Rugged and Panasonic’s own Toughbook 55 Mk2. Machines in the second group can survive drops of three or four feet. They often have ingress protection grades like IP53, which means they can’t be damaged by dust or small sprays of water.
The Toughbook 40 can survive a six-foot drop and has the MIL-STD 810H, MIL-STD 461G, and IP66 grades. This means that it is dustproof (no dust can get in) and resistant to splashes and strong jets of water, but it can’t go underwater like some smartphones can. Panasonic Toughbook 40: Display
The Panasonic ToughBook 40 has a 14-inch FHD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Since it’s a touch screen, you can use your fingers to get to different settings and apps. The screen can also be used with gloves and is easy to use when it is wet.
In terms of quality, this screen has extra brightness, well-saturated colors with high contrast, a wide viewing angle, and sharp details. Because the screen of the monitor doesn’t reflect light, you can use it even in bright sunlight or low light.

Panasonic Toughbook 40: Performance
The Toughbook 40’s basic setup has enough power to handle a wide range of computer tasks, such as surfing the web, watching videos, and using professional apps. This base model has a middle-of-the-road Intel Core i5-1145G7 vPro processor from the 11th Generation Tiger Lake line and 16GB RAM. I put it through its usual paces by using Chrome with multiple tabs, streaming YouTube and Netflix, and moving between apps. The Windows 11 Pro setup was quick and didn’t have any major problems.
Final Words
Even though it’s not a big part of my day job as a graphic designer, I love that there are these kinds of tough laptop computers. The Panasonic Toughbooks look so badass with their tough, mechanical look. The weight and the fact that it can’t be broken are also very amazing. Even so, it’s clear that this doesn’t fit in a classroom, office, couch, or café. It fits on a construction site, in a police car, in a military helicopter, on an army mission in the desert, or on a research trip to the Antarctic, which is pretty cool.
