In, the Jabra Elite 65t earphones were at the top of our list of best real wireless earphones for months, but they met their match with the RHA TrueConnect – and while the Sony WF-1000XM3 well and truly overshadowed both models, the RHA True Connect is still worth a look. We loved Jabra for its long battery life, comfort, and sound mode. Yet, RHA has spoiled us with the superior sound quality, more reliable connection, and an even more comfortable fit of the TrueConnect. This is our RHA TrueConnect Review.
The RHA TrueConnect is the company’s first step into the truly wireless headphone market, but the brand has won an immediate victory. Having said all this, if you’re buying a genuine wireless headset, the $170 RHA TrueConnect should be on your wishlist to check out.
RHA TrueConnect review: Design
The RHA TrueConnect has a restrained design with a matte black approach. The earplugs and pouch are coated with a soft rubber coating, making them feel warm against our ears. Like the Apple AirPods, the TrueConnect feature has a stem that protrudes from the bottom of each bud. All headphone controls are activated via the single button on each earpiece. You can control play/pause on either side, but only the left side controls music playback, while the right side controls volume.
Double-click on the right earpiece to increase the volume one step and triple press to decrease the volume. This control method isn’t very intuitive when you use the headphones for the first time, but we quickly get used to it. The casing of the TrueConnects features a unique swivel design that reveals the earbuds as they are slid backward. It’s a bit strange not to be able to see which way the case rotates because the design is symmetrical; however, that’s hardly a deal-breaker.
The case itself is well built with an aluminum lid that has a PVD coating in the color black. We discovered that after a few months of use, the PVD coating started to wear off a little at the edges and because the case’s housing is covered with the same matte black soft-touch rubber as the earplugs, it very easily attracts fingerprints. You’ll find a USB-C charging port on the bottom of the case, which means the earplugs come off faster than headphones that use the outdated micro-USB port.
RHA TrueConnect review: Performance
After a few months of using, we were very impressed by the wireless power of the RHA TrueConnect. The headphones are connected to our phone and each other every time we pulled it out of the case, and we rarely suffered from an audio anomaly. We also didn’t experience any of the lip-synchronization problems that are common with genuine wireless earphones such as the Bose SoundSport Wireless. The Jabra’s Elite 65t earbuds are also reliable, but we had to reset the headphones several times because they weren’t paired together anymore.
Not only were they reliable, but the TrueConnect earbuds also impressed with the sound quality. There was no hissing when there was no music playing, which is familiar with real wireless headphones, and they had, tonal-wise, a great balance. The bass is deep without being too high, the mid-tones are lush with a pleasant texture, and the highs are exciting without sounding sibilant. The overall clarity of the TrueConnect is warm but enjoyable to listen to for hours.
Battery Life
Even better is that you can listen to the RHA TrueConnect for hours because the earplugs last 5 hours on a single charge, and the battery case delivers another 20 hours for a combined playing time of 25 hours. This easily matches the battery life of the Jabra Elite 65t and has a better capacity than the battery case, and with USB-C fast charging, RHA TrueConnect can be a pair of headphones you can rely on.
Conclusion
Although the TrueConnect is the first truly wireless headphones from RHA, the company showed that they had done their research and development by making them one for the Best true wireless earbuds on the market right now. The combination of sound quality, wireless reliability, and battery life means these are headphones you can rely on every day. The Jabra Elite 65t sets the standard for what true wireless headphones should be, and, no matter what RHA has done here with TrueConnect, they are still fabulous headphones.
Compared to RHA TrueConnect, the Jabra set has more features with its convenient, ambient sound mode to help with surrounding awareness and an app that lets you customize the sound. The TrueConnect headphones don’t have any of these features, but we haven’t missed them, thanks to better sound quality and wireless reliability. RHA also feels more like a premium product than the all-plastic Jabra. This means the RHA TrueConnect should be at the top of your list if you’re looking for real wireless headphones that don’t break the bank.
