Samsung is used to being in this group. The Samsung Galaxy Buds and the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus came out before the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live. Since then, real wireless earbuds like the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro have come out. But none of these buds have the same kidney bean-shaped design as the Galaxy Buds Live.
In every way, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live are very different from what most people use. Their design is unlike anything we’ve ever seen, and they’re the first truly wireless earbuds from Samsung to have noise cancellation (though many later buds also do). They’re also tuned to have a lot of bass.
This is different from what we’ve seen from other brands, since most other wireless earbuds on the market just plug into your ear canals. Even though they are a few years old, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live have some of the same features as some of the best earbuds on the market, like the Apple AirPods pro and the Google Pixel Buds pro.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Live review: Design and Comfort
People have been saying this about the Galaxy Buds Live for a long time, but they really do look like a pair of beans. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t stylish and sleek on their own. The Buds Live have a unique shape that makes them fit surprisingly well in my ears (more on that later), and we like that their design doesn’t stick out of my ears like my AirPods do.
Like other Samsung earbuds, the Buds Live are different from the AirPods and AirPods Pro because they come in different colors. Our review unit was white like Apple products, but you can also get the Buds Live in beautiful Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black, and Mystic Red.
The curved square charging case for the Buds Live is one of the bigger ones we have used. It’s taller than the AirPods case but not as wide as the pill-shaped case for the Galaxy Buds Plus. Still, we like this case better than the one that came with Samsung’s old earbuds because it was much easier to find a good magnetic seal when putting the Buds Live away. You can buy this earbuds from its official website.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Live review: Sound quality
Even though the lack of aptX support is disappointing, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference in the real world because high-quality Bluetooth codecs must be optimized first for the basics. In other words, you need to make sure the earbuds fit well and make a seal with your ear canal. Other sounds often mask music.
Loud sounds outside make it hard to hear quieter sounds, and even quiet sounds can change the sound quality in different ways. This means that if you used a high-quality Bluetooth codec to stream your music instead of SBC, you wouldn’t be able to hear any more detail because background noise hides music detail.
In this case, the sound quality is fine with AAC, SBC, and the Samsung Scalable Codec. No high-quality codec will magically make the sound from the Galaxy Buds Live make you forget you have an audiophile setup.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Live review: Controls
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live have a touch sensor on the top, but we found that it always worked if we touched it right in the middle. There’s no clear way to tell where the touch area is, but since the buds aren’t too big, you can be sure that touch inputs will work unless you try to only touch the top edges.
Like the Galaxy Buds+, one tap on either bud starts or stops a song. If you double-tap, the next track will play; if you triple-tap, the previous track will play. If someone calls you, you can double-tap to answer. Once you accept the call, you can double-tap to end it. When you touch and hold, you can turn down calls.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Live review: Connectivity
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live connect with Bluetooth 5 and can use SBC, AAC, and Samsung’s own Scalable codecs. Each earpiece weighs 5.6g, and the case is about 42g. We were able to use the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live earpieces for about 5 hours and 30 minutes on a single full charge. Most of the time, active noise cancellation was turned on. The case could charge the earphones just under three times, giving each charge cycle a total battery life of about 20 hours.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Live review: Noise cancelling
Samsung has put a lot of tech into the Galaxy Buds Live, which is pretty cool. Each earbud has three microphones, a voice pickup unit, a speaker with a bass duct, and a number of sensors, like an accelerometer, an infrared sensor, and a touch-capacitive sensor.
All of this technology lets the Galaxy Buds Live have a lot of features, some of which work better than others. Let’s start with Active Noise Cancellation, which can be hard to do in earbuds that are so small. Even harder to get ANC on the Buds because they don’t have silicone ear tips that plug into your ear canal like some of the other buds with this tech.
So, Samsung made ANC for open-type earbuds. According to Samsung, ANC cuts up to 97% of low-band background noise under 700Hz, like trains and buses, while still letting you hear voices and announcements. This sounds good on paper, but when we tested it, it didn’t make much of a difference, at least not with voices.
We could hear people around us at lower volumes, with or without ANC, but when we turned up the volume to 90% or more, the voices went away, with or without ANC. In short, ANC works like most other wireless earbuds. It depends on how well the buds fit and how loud the music is.

Price and availability
There are also good things about it. The fit is great, the Bluetooth works well, and the battery can easily last a day. Also, microphones do a great job of ensuring your voice is clear and easy to understand.
Overall, the $140 price tag is still a bit too high for Samsung Galaxy Buds Live to be a good buy. If you really want them and don’t need them right away, you should wait a few months because the price will definitely go down.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Live review: Final Words
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live Truly Wireless are truly wireless earbuds with an unusual design that block out noise. They have a unique look, feel surprisingly stable and comfortable, and make a warm, well-balanced sound that will work with a wide range of music.
Even though they have noise canceling (ANC), they’re not the best earbuds for blocking out noise in general. However, they do a surprising job of blocking out low-frequency noises like bus or plane engines. Their slightly open fit makes them sound more open but also less stable than most in-ear headphones.
