Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 Review

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 is one of the best-sounding true wireless earbuds you can buy right now, beating Apple’s AirPods by miles in terms of overall sound quality and battery life. The German audio brand has been a trusted name in the world for its over-ear headphones and, since the launch of the popular Momentum True Wireless in 2019, the world of true wireless earbuds. Now Sennheiser has added noise cancellation to its popular earbuds, similar to the AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM3, as well as enhanced battery life and a compact design. This is our Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 Review.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 Review: Design

Last updated on July 8, 2020 9:54 pm

If you have reservations about saying goodbye with so much money for a pair of earbuds, spending a little time with Momentum True Wireless 2 should convince you that these earbuds are very well made, with the luxurious finish you’d expect for this price. The new True Wireless earbuds look quite similar to the originals, with glossy metallic touch-sensitive housings and a rounded shape.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 Review

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 looks sleek, and their silver finish looks smooth and stylish without being overly pretentious. Even the inside of these buttons looks good, with gold plated charging pins and LEDs indicating the status of the pairing. The charging case is just as sophisticated, with a grey weaved finish; on the back, you’ll see a USB-C charging port and a small button that you can press to see how much battery the case has via a small LED that lights up red, orange or green.

Sennheiser says the Momentum True Wireless 2 are 2mm smaller than the originals – and with three extra earbuds in the case, you should be able to find a good fit. However, if you have small ears, the circular housings may feel a little uncomfortable; after an extended listening session, our ears feel quite painful. We don’t think this is an issue that all users will encounter. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that if you have small ears, you may find these earbuds too big to use comfortably.

If you do find the fit comfortable, you should be able to use the IPX4-rated Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 as walking earbuds because they can withstand a little sweat or a few raindrops. The touch-sensitive housings allow you to attend or reject phone calls, adjust your music playback, and call up your device’s voice assistant. We thought the controls worked well, and if you want, you can assign different functions to the authorities via the Sennheiser Smart Control app.

There’s also a handy auto-pause feature that stops your music when you remove the buttons from your ears, quite helpful if you’re in a hurry. These controls also allow you to turn noise cancellation on and off, with a transparency mode that enables ambient noise to pass through the tips – handy if you’re using these earbuds for work out and want to be aware of your surroundings.

Battery life and Connectivity

These buttons have a much longer battery life than their predecessors, with seven hours of the buttons themselves, and another 21 hours of the charging case. That’s from four hours in the earbuds, and eight hours from the charging case, aligning them with the best true wireless earbuds in 2020. Pairing with our smartphone was a breeze, thanks to supporting the latest wireless streaming standard, Bluetooth v5.1 – and with support for Qualcomm aptX codec, you can easily stream Hi-Res Audio over Bluetooth.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 Review: Performance

Like their older siblings, the Momentum True Wireless 2 has 7mm dynamic drivers, which Sennheiser believes will create “excellent stereo sound, with deep bass, natural midrange, and clear, detailed treble.” While listening to SBTRKT’s Wildfire ft Little Dragon, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 masterfully navigated to tight synthesizer bass, clear, smooth vocals and textured treble that sounded spicy without being too loud.

As we continued Kelela’s Rewind, we were amazed at how daringly the lowest frequencies felt, with a chest-dropping intensity we wouldn’t normally expect from true wireless earphones. That’s not to say that the mid and treble frequencies were neglected, as chattering hi-hats and lush RnB singing swelled and blossomed all over the course. A wide soundstage and many sharp details make the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 a worthy competitor to the Sony WF-1000XM3 – although we wouldn’t say they sound as tightly controlled as the latter.

Also, the noise cancellation does not quite match Sony’s peaks. We found that although they block out some ambient noise, they could leak quite a bit – turn on your music, and the rest of the world will melt away.

Price and Availability

Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 2 cost $299/£279/AU$499.95, making them significantly more costly than our current best true wireless earbuds, the Sony WF-1000XM3, which cost $230/£220/AU$400. It’s the same price their predecessors launched last year – if you want to save money, you might want to check out the first generation Momentum True Wireless earbuds as you can usually find them at a discount.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 Review: Conclusion

The sound quality, the battery life, and the design of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are no less than excellent, and we warmly recommend it to anyone looking for an alternative to the Sony WF-1000XM3 – the differences are negligible. We would hesitate to recommend these tops is if your ears are on the smaller side – in any case, make sure the vendor you choose provides returns where the product is not faulty. (Sennheiser, for example, doesn’t allow this if you’re dealing directly with the company).

Otherwise, though, these true wireless earbuds should make a fantastic purchase for anyone looking to cut the cord, with enough sonic authority to satisfy even the most loyal audiophile.

9.5 Total Score

The sound quality, battery life, and design of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are nothing short of excellent, and we would highly recommend them to anyone looking for an alternative to the Sony WF-1000XM3. However, those with smaller ears may find them a little uncomfortable, and their high price prevents them from taking the best true wireless earbuds of 2020.
