Overview

The smartwatch world wants a budget powerhouse to emerge from China. The country has fuelled the fitness tracker market with the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 and provide us a boggling array of respectable smartphones – however; the smartwatch world is still left wanting. The simple fact is that most smartwatches are too costly. Sure, there are some aging bargains to be had when you’re comfortable to wait for the end of the life cycle for a low-cost smartwatch. However, the Ticwatch 2 is totally different.

Connecting US soil for the first time this September for just $199 following a barnstorming Kickstarter campaign that’s raised more than $1.6 million, the Ticwatch 2 is a serious piece of. We have got our arms on an early preview sample, so read on for our first impressions.

Ticwatch 2 Design

This is simply one of the design cues that seem to have been taken from the Samsung Gear S2. The TicWear OS looks like a translation of Tizen, especially in the health and fitness features, with the bright orange icons and bold major colors. The watch face selection screen is including a dead ringer for Android Wear, which has certainly been a large influence.

Ticwatch 2 Hardware

Ticwatch 2 is controlled by a 1.2 GHz dual-core MTK MT2601. It has a 4G of ROM for OS and media storage and 512M of RAM. The watch has a big selection of features together with support for iOS 8.0+/Android 4.3+, Ticharge magnetic wifi charging, 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and a suite of sensors providing it to be used as a fitness tracker.

Thesensors have a GLONASS, Beidou, GPS and an optical heart rate sensor that connects with Google Fit to data your fitness stats. Despite no longer holding the SIM Card support, it’s still a complete set of features. The watch feels fast and responsive as I swipe via its apps and menus using the gesture-based, Cubic UI.

Notable Software Features

The four standout features that I use daily are the AI voice interaction, palm, flip and knock gestures, and of course Cubic UI.

Ticwatch 2 specification

First, the re’s the screen, simply the standout feature of the Ticwatch 2. A 400 x 400 OLED panel with a swashbuckling 287ppi, it’s vibrant and bright, and the colorful TicWear 4.0 interface is surely eye-catching.

The build itself is one of the slimmest we have seen, and no bulkier than most dumb analog watches. As an ensemble, it’s extremely impressive.

Back to the appear and feel of the Ticwatch 2, it features a brushed metal bezel, which appears fairly premium, even if that’s not translated via the feel of the device.

Conclusion

I worked this review with an open mind, not understanding what to expect from the Ticwatch 2. I needed to experience something new, something totally different from everything I have used in the past. Ticwatch 2 met my hopes and more. Thus it has restored my Pebble Time as my daily driver. When you’re looking to get into the smartwatch game whereas saving some extra bucks, you won’t go wrong with the Ticwatch 2. It’s a simple tackle the smartwatch that I found it thoroughly refreshing.
