Mechanical keyboards aren’t as rare as they used to be. The hobby is going well because there are so many options for cases, PCBs, switches, and keycaps. But we our most excited about the growing number of options for people who are just starting out. From Keychron to Glorious, you can buy a lot of promising mechanical keyboards to get your feet wet.
One of these keyboards is the Vissles V84, which starts at $99 and is likely to become my new favourite for my MacBook Pro. The V84 should be at the top of your list if you’re looking for a new pre-built keyboard. It has RGB lighting, a PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) keycap option, and one of the best linear switches we have used in a while. It’s easily one of the best mechanical keyboards you can buy, especially if you’re new to the hobby.

Vissles V84 review: Design
There are mechanical keyboards for beginners that are cheaper, like the Keychron K2, but the V84 is one of the nicer ones. The body is still made of plastic, but the big 3,750 mAh battery gives the board a nice weight. Since we started using this keyboard, it hasn’t moved at all, thanks to the magnetic feet that can be added.
The V84 doesn’t take up much space on my desk. It is 12.4 inches wide and 5 inches long. This is a 75% layout, so you get the function row, arrow keys, page up/down, home/end, delete, pause, and print screen. We can’t decide if we like 65% or 75% keyboards better. The 75% keyboards work well with MacBooks because the function row works with the macOS media keys. You can get this keyboard from its official website
Vissles V84 review: Performance
One of the best things about this Vissles V64 keyboard is that it has a PCB design that can be swapped out while it’s running. There is a key-puller that makes it easy to change the keycaps, and there is also a switch-puller that makes it easy to change the keyswitches underneath. Users are free to mix and match keyswitches, and they are encouraged to do so in a subtle way.
Vissles had put in its own RGB backlit VSII linear (non-click, non-tactile) switches everywhere in the test sample I used. If you want some keys to click, you can easily take off the keycap, then the switch, and plug in a new one.
Vissles V84 review: Software
You can switch between RGB modes with the function key, but they are all pretty standard OEM RGB. You can also change the brightness level without having to use any other software. We did have some trouble with the software, though, because it wouldn’t show any text at all.
Thanks to another function combination, you can record macros on the board, which makes the whole piece of software feel a little bit useless. When the computer was turned back on, the software was able to fix itself and send a firmware update to the board.
Vissles V84 review: Price and availability
Even if I opened it up and found it was full of bricks, it would be hard to complain about the price for a keyboard that feels this good. Not to mention that you can change the keycaps and make it even more uniqu.
It can also be used as a Bluetooth device that works with Macs and has changeable keycaps for those who need it. This device is a bit of a no-brainer because it can be used in a lot of different ways. It has swappable switches, wired and Bluetooth connections, and is small enough to carry around.
Final Words
The Vissles V84 is a good choice if you want a compact mechanical RGB keyboard that is well made and can be customised. Those who like to tinker will also find it useful to be able to swap both keycaps and switches. But the poor software that comes with it doesn’t seem ready for launch yet, and we think the maximum RGB lighting could have been a bit brighter.
