Apple’s News app has been a happy place for iPhone users for a few years now. You can read content that is tailored to your tastes, go in-depth with news organisations you subscribe to, and follow your favourite channels, genres, and more.
It’s also a great way to get hits on today’s big news stories and other important news. Even though it was made a few years after Apple’s News app, the Google News app has a lot of the same great features. You can also get it on your iPhone and iPad.
They are platforms for distributing content, and mobile is a big part of what they do. Users can search for articles based on topics or publishers, and publishers can make money from ads and use tools to track how well their articles are doing.
Google News vs Apple News: Features
Google News | Apple News |
---|---|
The Google News app is a new version of the Google Newsstand Play app, which used to be available on the iOS App Store. | Contains articles from the Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times |
Even if you don’t choose specific topics, Google News gives you more ways to control what you see than Google Feed. | Any magazines you’ve bought or articles you’ve saved before will also show up here. |
The new Newscasts feature on Google News is one of the more interesting ways to see stories. The news is kind of like Instagram Stories. | To sign up for News+, all you have to do is click on the tab and then follow the instructions on the screen. |
Google News vs Apple News: Performance
Google News didn’t give me a very wide range of stories: two about entertainment, one about a celebrity, and one about technology. Even so, this is where my interests lie, and Google probably knows this because I use Google Chrome to browse the web on my computer.
At first glance, it seemed like Apple News had a better mix of stories from a wider range of sources. When you look a little closer, all but one of the headlines have the word “Trump” in them.
Google News vs Apple News: User Interface
When you open either News app, the first thing you see is the “For You” section. Here, news is put together based on the articles you’ve read and marked as favorites and the categories, organizations, or topics you follow.
Google puts the stories it thinks are the most important for the hour at the top of the page. It has big news stories, local news, and stories based on the news you pay attention to. Just below the top stories section, Apple highlights stories that are popular right now.
Google News vs Apple News: Design
Along the top, a colourful module put together news stories about the 2018 elections. As I scrolled down, the top stories were set up like tiles, which made it hard to know where to look first.
Even with all of that, the app had a good mix of news stories at the top, from politics to science to business. On the other hand, these are the top stories as chosen by the Apple News team. They didn’t include stories from other verticals like sports or entertainment.
Which One is better?
One thing we liked about Google News was that it had a feature called “Full Coverage.” First, top coverage from different sources is available, then a series of Tweets about the topic, then a timeline of events, a few opinion pieces, analysis articles, and finally all coverage from different points of view.
Already, it does a great job of showing you articles you might want to read. AI and ML systems that make recommendations will benefit from you pointing out which articles and topics you like and which ones you don’t.

FAQs
Why Apple News is the best?
With Apple News, it’s easy to keep up with the news and information that matters most, and you can read the same thing on all of your devices. Apple News editors with a lot of experience pick the best stories of the day from reliable sources, and advanced algorithms help you find stories you’ll find interesting.
How good is the Google News app?
The new Google News is nice and fits what I’m interested in. It won’t change the fact that many news sources today are just clickbait and of questionable quality, though. The only thing the “full picture” feature does is show how much one source copied from other sources.
Is it worth it to get the Apple News app?
Apple News is a great way to keep up with the latest news. It’s easy to use and has a lot of different sources. You can also change your news feed so that you only see stories that are interesting to you.
