How to Insert Captions to Photos in Google Docs – Guide

While Google Docs is one of the best document creation tools, it doesn’t do much justice when it comes to dealing with multimedia content. For example, you can’t add and play videos within a Google Docs document (there is an alternative though). Likewise, when it comes to images, Google Docs doesn’t allow you to add captions to add context to images.

use the design Feature

To access the drawing feature, open the Insert menu and click Drawing > New. This will open a window that lets you create a new design using shapes, calluses, lines or arrows, among other tools. Now you must insert the image. You can do this by copying a URL or sending it to Google Drive from your device or account.

After uploading and resizing the image, click the text box icon in the top menu and add text. You can move the text using the Select tool. In addition, you can use various text formatting options such as size, font, color, alignment, italics, bold, bullets and so on. Finally, when finished editing the image and caption, select Save and Close button.

Open the Insert menu, click Table and select a 1 x 2 grid size.

Drag and drop the image to the top cell.

Type the caption into the bottom cell and use Google Docs ‘ features to edit it however you like.

Right-click on the table and select Properties.

use an add-on

If you have to frequently insert subtitles in Google Docs, you should install an add-on to make Google Docs more professional. Go to the Google Workspace Marketplace by opening the Add-ons menu located at the top and select Get Add-ons.

We recommend using Caption Maker, but there are other options available as well.

After inserting, resizing and organizing your images, click Add-ons > Caption Creator > Start. Then select the caption button.

By default, Caption Maker will label the images as Figure 1, 2, and so on. However, there is no need to worry as you can easily edit the caption text by double clicking on it.

How to use Caption Maker to speed up up your edit:

If you need to insert captions in a specific part of the document, select that part and click Set Caption before clicking Caption. Or you can select the part where you don’t want to insert subtitles and select Disable subtitle.

If you need to create a list containing captioned images or tables, select Image List or Table List. Also, if you need to update these lists, click Update Lists.
