138 Swipe down from your iPad home screen or Press Command-Space on an external keyboard The new Universal Search on iPadOS 14 is so similar to Spotlight on Mac that you can use it with the same key. Command-Space is the default for Spotlight, although you can change it. And it’s the only option on the iPad, as you can’t change the main keys. Provided, of course, you have an external keyboard, this keyboard shortcut is by far the most practical way to start a search. That’s because with the keyboard, you can call up Universal search anytime, in any app. To do this without an external keyboard, you have to swipe down in the middle of the screen – and you can’t do this when you’re in any app. To dismiss the search because you’ve changed your mind, tap Command-S on the external keyboard again or tap anywhere on the screen away from the search bar. Once the search bar is open, you can tap the microphone icon to dictate your search. There is currently no keyboard shortcut to open the search bar and set running dictation. The most visible difference in the search is not in the results. Instead, it’s in the appearance of the screen when you enter a search or view the results. Where searching on the iPad used to take up the entire screen and somewhat waste the display, it’s now a search bar much like Spotlight. If you use the keyboard you will get a simple search bar and if you use the swipe gesture you will get the same bar plus suggestions. These results are now shown in a column hanging in the search bar, so they don’t take up the entire screen either. Normally, you’ll see enough results for it to be a long list, but it all adds up to that feeling of research helping you. It’s no longer like you’re stopping your work to search in some separate app. In addition to this change in how you use search, the next most visible difference is that it now includes music. If you have an Apple Music subscription, searching for an artist, for example, will return details from there. Well, although the search results usually include a direct link to the artist in Apple Music, there’s also a music result that’s much more useful. Rather than being some kind of promotion for the service, the new Universal Search returns specific tracks first — and tells you when you last played them. There is also a game button right there in the results. What’s more, tapping it doesn’t discard the results, it just starts playing the music. That way, you can get a list of tracks that match your search criteria, then tap each one to find the one you want, without having to constantly redo your search. In this music example, and indeed in all sections of the search results, there is an in-app Search button. Tapping it will take you to the relevant app, such as Music, and perform the search again for you there. Most of the time, Universal Search will return three results for every possible category related to your search. So you can get three songs, three related websites, and so on. Searching within the app gets all the results of it. You were able to search your Contacts in the previous version of search on iPad and it worked fine. Now it works better. Start typing a name in Universal Search and it will show you the contact card of the one you probably want. It does this based on who you contacted last or most often, but it also presents other matching results. It just doesn’t just return results from the obvious application. So when you’re shown that someone is listed in your Contacts, they’ll also search your Calendar for upcoming related appointments that mention them. Depending on your system and what you do, you might see three recent emails from them. And three Pages documents in which they are named. Or you can have one-touch access to the Messages they sent to you. What Universal Search does is look at the obvious top places for results – like music in Music, people in Contacts – and then within documents. It’s researching everything, but then trying to present the results intelligently. Most of the time, you’ll find that you’ve found what you need. However, there is always a Show more results option that allows you to see more. Lastly, if something is proving stubbornly hard to find, you can direct Universal Search’s attention to a specific location. This is the App Search feature and Universal Search lists a number of likely apps for you. Typically, this will include the option to search Notes, Maps, or the App Store. You can also get it to search Music or Files. very well this feature it’s not limited to Apple’s own apps. If you use the 5note Drafts app, for example, it might be introduced to you in this list. The first time you use Universal Search on iPadOS 14, you’ll notice impressive visual differences. But the second time you use it, you won’t.
