How to Sort in Google Sheets by Multiple Columns – Guide

Sorting data in Google Sheets is a simple process. You can sort a single column (alphabetically or by numeric value in ascending/descending order) or multiple columns (alphabetically or by numeric value in ascending/descending order) (based on one of the columns). However, what if you have multiple columns and want to sort them all at the same time? Suppose you have a dataset like the one below and you want to sort it first by area and then by sales. That way, you’ll have all the records for each region in one place, and sales can be sorted from highest to lowest within each zone.

Sort by multiple columns in Google Sheets

Here are the steps to sort by multiple columns in Google Sheets:

  • Select the entire dataset (A1:C13 in this example)
  • Click on the Data tab
  • Click on the Sort Range option
  • In the ‘Sort Range’ dialog, click the ‘Data has header row’ option. No need to check this if you don’t have a header row
  • In the Sort by drop-down list, click Region and sort order as A -> Z
  • Click on ‘Add another sort column’ option
  • From the ‘so by’ dropdown select Sales and the sort order as Z -> A (as we want the sort from highest to lowest sales amount)
  • Click on Sort
