How to Watch YouTube in PIP mode on any Android device – Guide

PiP mode is now available for the YouTube Android app, but is limited to US and YouTube Premium subscribers worldwide only. As not all smartphone users get this feature, here it is how to enable YouTube PiP mode on any Android phone. Android Picture in Picture (PiP) mode is a feature which lets you watch a video in a small overlay window in the corner of your screen when you jump from app to app. That way, you can watch Netflix or Google something while casually chatting with a friend in another app. The function, which is mainly used for video playback, can be found on Android smartphones running Android Oreo and later versions of the operating system.

However, the PiP video window itself has no playback options other than a play/pause icon. You should use the options in the YouTube browser window or the tab itself if you want to jump to another part of the video, control the video quality, etc. If you exit picture-in-picture mode and want to watch YouTube again in the tab or browser window, simply select the “Back to Tab” icon in the PiP panel.

Open the YouTube app on your Android device, play the video you want to watch in PiP mode and tap “share” button below the video title.

On the share screen, tap the “Float Tube Video” icon and you will see that the video starts playing inside this app. Now, you will need to tap the icon in the lower right corner of the video player (the one we marked) for the video to enter picture-in-picture mode.

Floating apps (multitasking app)

After installing the app, provide the required permission and you will start to see the ‘Floating Apps’ icons in the top left corner. It will appear right at the top of the notification bar, which you can customize as per your needs.

Now, tap the floating icon in the notification bar, scroll down and select the YouTube app at the bottom. This will open YouTube mobile web app inside a resizable floating window and you can search and play any video inside it. You can search for the videos you want to watch while using any other app on your device.

As you can see below, the YouTube video plays inside the floating window without any hiccups. You can tap the “X” button in the upper right corner to close said window when finished watching the videos.
