After recent updates to Destiny 2, Control, and the great Nioh games, PlayStation 5 owners are in a golden age of cross-generational gaming. But if you’re not careful, you might as well end up up playing the PlayStation 4 version of a cross-generational game on your PS5. The horror! Microsoft’s latest consoles, the Xbox Series X and S, deliver the next-gen version of a game (if it has one and the developer hasn’t disabled it for an extra cost) through an automated process called “Smart Delivery”.

That might sound like a no-feature feature, a term coined in a Seattle meeting room full of communication experts, but actually quite useful. It can reasonably be argued that Smart Delivery is one of the features of Microsoft’s two next-gen consoles. However, on PlayStation the process is not automatic. It’s very easy to download and launch up the PlayStation 4 version of a game that’s been around for generations (like Bugsnax, Control or the newly revamped Nioh 2).

The DualSense options Button

The first way is only available with games that have blocks in the main menu – in others words, games you’ve installed or played recently. Therefore, you may be limited in the number of games you can check. However, it is the fastest and clearest way to determine which version of the game you have installed.

Find the game tile you want to check on your PS5 home screen. When the tile is highlighted and the game background takes up across the screen, check the game title just below the row of tiles. Normally, if the installed game version is for the previous generation console, the game title will have “PS4” in the final.

If this isn’t clear enough, you can also check which version of the game is installed using the Options menu while in the game tile. tap on options button on your DualSense controller. this is the small button by the upper right corner of the touchpad. that will bring up a drop-down menu of on-screen options next to the tile.

If you are playing a cross-gen title (i.e. one that is available on both PS4 and PS5 versions), the menu will have a “Check Game Version” option.

After selecting “Check game version”, a submenu will appear on the screen with all game versions listed. The version you installed on your system will have a checkmark next to it.

The ellipsis menu

The second way to check if you have the PS4 version of a game installed on your PS5 is via the ellipsis menu next to “Play” button at the bottom of home screen. The information you find here will be a little different.

When opening the ellipsis menu, you will see a version of the game listed. This is the version of the game you have not selected at the moment. So if you see a listing for “PS5 [Game Title]” in the ellipsis menu, it means you don’t have the PS5 version of the game installed.

Selecting this from the ellipsis menu will change the game to that version and again if the “Play” option button switches to a “Download” button, this version of the game will not be installed.

Unlike the options button drop-down menu, you can access the ellipsis menu in the “Game Library”. You can find it on the right side of the home top bar of the screen. The Game Library shows all games you have currently installed or purchased, not just the ones displayed in the main menu.

If you have both versions of the game installed, you can also delete the version you don’t want. Just select “Delete” in Options button drop-down menu.

You will be taken to a screen where you can select which version of the game you want to delete. You can also delete both if you wish. Any version of the game that has a box checked next to it will be deleted.

How to Be sure to download the PS5 version

What about games that aren’t installed yet? Fortunately, the ellipsis menu gives you the option to choose which version of the game to download. First, go to the “Game Library” on the right side of the home screen main menu.

Then select the game tile you want to install. If you can’t find it at first, you can select various filter options in the button on the left side of the Library that can help reduce it. You can also sort your games alphabetically to make it even easier.

Once you find the uninstalled game in question, tap the “X” button on your DualSense controller while your tile is highlighted and you will be taken to a game page. Select the ellipsis next to “Download” button and bring up the menu again.

You will see versions of the game that are not currently selected – meaning the one you don’t see in this menu is the one you would be downloading.

So if you want to install the PS5 version of the game, make sure that version is not listed in the ellipsis menu. If it is, select it. To make sure there is a version of PS5 to install, try selecting another version and check the ellipsis menu again.
