Several Windows users asked us for help after being prevented from booting by BSOD error 0x0000007B. As you can see, the frequency of this error is higher in versions of Windows prior to Windows 10 (Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1). In general, this particular error seems to occur when PC suddenly loses access to system partition during boot sequence. 0X0000007B refers to INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

It is mainly caused by device driver issues. (Hard disk failure, RAM memory, etc.) means the computer cannot access the hard disk that stores boot records. Error 0x7B may appear due to virus, data corruption or other hardware failure.

How to Fix STOP errors 0x0000007B

  • Restart your computer if you haven’t already. The Stop error 0x0000007B blue screen could be a fluke.
  • Have you just installed or changed a hard drive controller? If so, there is a good chance that the change you made caused the STOP 0x0000007B error. Undo the change and test for the 0x7B blue screen error. Depending on the changes you’ve made, some solutions might include:

  • Run chkdsk on your hard drive. If the boot volume is corrupted, the chkdsk command can repair the damage.
  • Perform extensive testing of your hard drive. If your hard drive has a physical problem, a very likely situation is the STOP 0x0000007B error you are seeing. Replace the hard drive if the diagnostics you’ve completed suggest there is a hardware issue with the drive.
  • Run the fixmbr command to create a new master boot record. A corrupted master boot record may be causing the STOP 0x0000007B error.
  • Clear CMOS. Sometimes the STOP 0x0000007B error is caused by a BIOS memory issue. Clearing CMOS can solve this problem.
  • Update your BIOS. In some situations, an outdated BIOS can cause this error due to incompatibilities with a hard disk controller.
  • Update the hard drive controller firmware if possible. As with the BIOS in the previous step, an incompatibility might be causing the 0x7B error and a firmware update from the manufacturer might fix the problem.
  • Repair your Windows installation. If you’ve just replaced the motherboard on a computer without reinstalling Windows, this will likely solve the problem.
