How to Fix Firefox error “Proxy server is refusing connections”

Force Firefox to use automatic proxy detection settings

Open the Mozilla Firefox browser.

Click on the action button in the upper right section of the screen.

Choose Options or Preferences from the context menu.

Select the General category from the left vertical menu.

Scroll down the right side menu to Network Settings.

Click Settings button to open the advanced menu.

Set Configure internet access to Automatically detect proxy settings for this network.

Click OK to save your changes and restart your Firefox browser.

Add URL SSL port to allowed list

Review the URL that is triggering the error to verify the port that is being actively used for HTTPS.

Open the proxy configuration settings and look for a setting that allows you to add the port as an alternate SSL port.

Save the configuration change and restart the computer.

Switch to HTTPS proxy

If you are accessing the FTP site through an HTTP proxy, switch to an HTTPS proxy that ensures secure end-to-end communication.

Disable the built-in proxy server (Windows 10)

Press Windows key + R to open the Run box.

Type ms-settings: network-proxy and press Enter to open the Proxy tab of the Settings menu.

Scroll down to the manual proxy configuration section in the right-hand menu.

Disable the Use a proxy server setting.

Restart the computer.

Disable the built-in proxy server (Windows 7 and Windows 8.1)

Press Windows key + R to open a Run box.

Type inetcpl.cpl and press Enter to open the Internet Properties tab.

Select the Connections tab and click LAN Settings button in local area network (LAN) settings.

Uncheck Use a proxy server for LAN configuration.

Restart the computer.

Uninstall VPN Client

Press Windows key + R to open a Run box.

Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open Programs and Features screen. If prompted for User Account Control (UAC), click Yes to grant administrative privileges.

Scroll through the list of installed apps and find the VPN client you are using, right-click on it and choose Uninstall from the context menu.

Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the uninstall and restart your computer.
