How to Automatically Back up Windows Folders to OneDrive – Guide

Microsoft is introducing new folder protection feature for OneDrive. Folder Protection gives you the ability to automatically sync your desktop documents, pictures and folders to OneDrive to ensure that important folders on a PC are protected up to Microsoft’s cloud service. If you use multiple Windows 10 PCs, OneDrive will automatically sync all these folders, which is especially useful if you want to keep important documents on your desktop.

Microsoft first made this OneDrive folder protection feature available to enterprise customers in June, but is now also available to all regular OneDrive users. OneDrive is a popular cloud-based service hosted by Microsoft. It was formerly known as SkyDrive and can be used to upload files to the cloud that can be accessed from multiple platforms. The file hosting service is over 10 years old and supports multiple languages.

Users get a free 5GB storage space on OneDrive. Later, they can pay for a premium plan to get more storage. There is a special backup and restore service for various devices that can be used to backup up files from Windows, Android or iOS devices to OneDrive. As OneDrive is a cloud-based service, you can access shared files anytime and anywhere.

How to back automatically up Windows Folders for OneDrive

First, right-click on the folder in Windows Explorer and select “Properties” from the context menu.

Then select the “Location” tab.

Now click on the “Move” button button.

Then double-click “OneDrive” in the folder dialog box.

Select an existing folder to store your videos or click “New Folder” button to create a new folder. After choosing a folder, select it and click “Select Folder”.

The location of your Video folder will now change to the one you chose. Click “OK” to close the dialog.

A warning dialog will be displayed. Click “Yes” to ensure all your files are where your apps expect them to be.

Your videos folder is now protected up for OneDrive. Repeat above steps for Downloads and Music folders if you want them to be copied up for OneDrive too.

This method will only work for standard Windows folders. If you created other folders in different locations that you would like to back up up for OneDrive, you can move them to OneDrive, but this is not always a suitable solution.
