How To Change WiFi Channel – Guide
Wi-Fi routers broadcast on two different frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. GHz stands for gigahertz. A hertz is the unit used to indicate cycles or waves per second. The Wi-Fi signal travels through the air like a wave. Giga means billions. The router transmits at 2.4 billion or 5 billion cycles per second. Within these bands, the router transmits on slightly different frequencies. At 2.4 GHz, frequencies can range from 2.400 GHz to 2.499 GHz. Each channel differs by 0.005 GHz from the closest adjacent channels. This is explained in some instructions below. In the 5 GHz band, the difference between adjacent channels is 0.010 GHz. Why is this? A lower frequency means the signal will propagate further, but the quality will not be as good. A higher frequency means good signal quality but a shorter range. If you use both bands, you will have more Wi-Fi coverage and a better signal close to the router.
When you are closer to the router, the device switches to the 5 GHz frequency. If it is further away from the router and the quality of the 5 GHz frequency drops, the device will switch to the 2.4 GHz frequency to maintain the connection. Has your Wi-Fi been slow lately and is it losing connections? It is likely that your Wi-Fi router is broadcasting on the same channel as someone else, or perhaps several people. Just like radio, Wi-Fi broadcasts use channels. Imagine two local radio stations broadcasting on the same channel. How would that work? Not at all, and that’s a good reason to check your Wi-Fi channel and possibly change it.
