Word offers a few built-in ways to change your headers and footers in a document. For example, you can easily use different headers and footers for odd and even pages, or you can use different headers and footers on the first page. To go beyond that, you need to create several sections in your document and learn how to link and unlink headers and footers to the previous section. If you select this option, any text that is already in the header and footer of the first page will be deleted. Also note that the section names on the first page change to Header of first page and Footer of first page. You can leave them blank or fill in the gaps with other text that doesn’t affect headers and footers on subsequent pages.
A typical document convention is to have a different header and footer on the first page of a document than on the rest of the document. Maybe you have a homepage that you don’t want a header or footer on. Or maybe you want the footer on the first page to show your company’s official disclaimer text and the footer in the rest of the document to show the page numbers. Whatever your reason, Word makes it easy for you. The Header/Footer panel becomes active and a new Design tab appears on the ribbon with controls for handling headers and footers.
How to make a different header on the first page in word
It is common to have a header on the first page that is different from the header on the remaining pages. You can print the document path and name or include your company logo or even more common if the first page is a title page then you may not want any headers.
The single document comprises several instances of the RAND function for creating text — four pages of it. Let’s say you want to display a page number in the header for all but the first page. To do this, do the following:
Figure A
The Different First Page option leaves the header blank on the first page and lets you use a header on the remaining pages of the document. Now, this doesn’t look like a “multi-header” issue, but it is – an empty header is a type of header. In fact, you can insert a different header for the first page if you like! I left it blank because it’s a common task.
You can also add the page numbering scheme to all pages and click on the Different First Page option. The word is versatile; the order in which you apply the options does not matter at this point. Now let’s move on to different headers for odd and even pages.
How to make different headers for even and odd pages in Word
In long documents, especially when you are viewing a spread sheet, it is common to have a different header on odd and even pages. We will solve this requirement by displaying the page number in the left margin for even pages and on the right for odd pages – similar to the length of two pages in a book.
At this point, page numbers 2, 3, and 4 are all left-aligned. To change this, do the following:
As you can see in Figure B, odd pages show the page number in the right margin and even pages show the page number in the left margin. This spread looks a little weird because the odd page 3 is on the right, but don’t be confused by what you see on the screen. This is just a display behavior. If you add enough text to make a fifth page, you’ll see that the page number is right-aligned. From now on, all even pages will be left-aligned and odd-numbered pages will be right-aligned. Also, page 1 does not yet have a header.
