Google offers a good feature in its Photos app that allows users to highlight the subject from the background by applying a black and white filter to the background, leaving the subject in its original colors. Google’s algorithm makes the main subject stand out from the background, but there are some limitations to the feature. For example, Color Pop can only be applied to a handful of images in Google Photos. Second, you cannot edit images manually after applying Color Pop effect.

How to Creating Color Images with the Snapseed App

After opening the image in Snapseed, tap the Looks tab and select the Pop or Accentuate filter.

Tap the Tools tab and select Black & White from the menu. Select the Neutral tone and tap Done (tick icon in the upper right corner). Now the real game begins.

After saving the current changes, you will see an Undo icon next to the Info icon. that will bring up a submenu. Select View edits.

All filters you applied to the current image will be displayed up in the lower right corner. Our goal is to manually reverse the Black and White filter of the selected area.

Then, tap Black and White and select the Stacks Brush tool (middle icon). With the Black & White parameter set to 100, start by drawing a layer mask over the subject – the area will be denoted by red. Let me warn you that this is going to be a long and tedious process. The trick is to draw the mask as close to the edge of the subject as possible. To do this, enlarge the image several folds by pinching. This also helps you work with a thinner brush.

Once outlined, fill in the interior. Make sure you don’t leave any blank spaces, even the smallest.

When you’re sure you’ve drawn the mask as neatly as possible, tap the Invert icon in the bottom strip. As its name suggests, it will invert the mask area so that the Black and White filter will apply to the selected area.
