How to Defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring – Guide
Elden Ring has some of the coolest but also the toughest bosses in recent video game history. Players new to the Souls genre will have fun here, but some bosses can be stressful even for seasoned Souls fans. One of these bosses is Malenia, Miquella’s Blade. She quickly gained notoriety in the community, and with good reason, as she is by far the toughest boss in the Elden Ring.
To keep you from biting your controller in anger, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the boss fight with Malenia. In this guide we will show you how and where to start the fight, what are the strengths and weaknesses of Malenia and how to defeat her.
How to Defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring
Avoid Malenia’s waterfowl dance
The Waterbird Dance is by far Malenia’s most dangerous attack. When it starts, Melania leaps into the air and hovers for a second with her sword ready. If you’re not out of reach or know exactly what to do next, you’re already dead.
Your first option is to run. The waterfowl dance covers a large area, but it’s perfectly possible to go far enough that Malenia can’t catch you. However, you should already have some distance or start running immediately when she jumps. Immediately here really means immediately. If you’re in an attack, roll, or heal animation when the waterfowl dance starts, you won’t have time to run.
This brings us to our next option: roll for the attack. Yes, this is possible. The trick is to roll to the right towards Melania and run underneath her when she starts to sway. Wait until she launches and roll under her to avoid the first part of the attack. However, two more attacks will follow, where you will also have to get past her. If you try to move away from Melania or perpendicular to her, you will get caught by the secondary blows when you come off the roll. The only way out is through the passage.
Finally, it is possible to block the waterfowl dance. However, aside from a possible max stamina and a new game+, this is not possible without the Barricade Shield skill. The attack hits nearly a dozen times and drains your stamina bar and breaks your block without the added durability of Barricade Shield. Also, Malenia’s healing makes blocking difficult to recommend, as she recovers health every time she hits her shield. Still, it’s an option to consider if the first two methods don’t work.
Learn how to read the claw of malenia
Malenia’s grapple attack isn’t as threatening as Water Bird Dance, but that’s no different with Elden Ring. However, it can and will take a hit on builds with less health, so it’s worth discussing. If you’ve ever played a fighting game, you won’t be surprised to learn that you can’t block grapples. This attack ignores your shield and heavily penalizes getting behind your block.
Fortunately, it’s very easy to read. The only trick is to distinguish it from Melania’s lunge attack. Both attacks start on the ground, where she retreats before advancing through the arena. For the boost, she turns to the right and pulls her sword back. To grab, Melania turns slightly to the left while keeping the free hand she holds at her side. Once you recognize these two attacks, they shouldn’t be a problem.
Survive the start of Malenia’s second phase by rolling under it
A new attack in Malenia’s arsenal for Phase Two is a Dive Bomb, which deals massive damage on impact before unleashing a scarlet blast. The second phase of the battle always starts with this attack, and it can be frustrating to get overwhelmed by it before you have a chance to study the phase. Fortunately, there is a simple trick to avoid the attack.
All you have to do is roll up and under Melania, just as you did with the waterfowl dance. For some reason the secondary blast seems to consistently pick rolls away from Malenia. If you roll under it, you can effectively dodge both blows and have time to retreat when the rot blooms. If you have a way to deal damage from a distance, the long bloom animation is a good time to do some damage.
Use weapon skills that take down Malenia
Malenia staggers almost as easily as a normal opponent and rewards your aggression…. Up to a point. She also recovers quickly from falling and loves to punish you if you try to land an extra hit. However, it is just as easy to drop or drop, resulting in larger, safer openings.
Certain weapon skills lend themselves incredibly well to this task. Blasphemous Blade’s Flame of the Sexton ability, Prelate’s Charge, and even a simple Uppercut serve as effective crowd control. Combine these abilities with Mimic Tear or another powerful Spirit Ash, and you can corner Malenia for most of the fight.
Use Blood Loss or Frostbite to neutralize Malenia’s healing
Healing Malenia can be frustrating, but there are a few ways to counteract it. Of course, “don’t get hit” is the most important of them, but there are other practical methods as well. Blood loss adds a percentage to Malenia’s health, making her a reliable source of extra damage that can disrupt her healing. Weapons like Bodyy Helice and Rivers of Blood work especially well.
Frost Bite deals less initial damage, but lowers the target’s damage reduction. This helps you deal more consistent damage during the fight and makes any healing less effective. The Hoarfrost Stomp skill is one of the best ways to use Frostbite, even after the recent nerf.
