How to Disable Notifications on different Devices – Guide

Smartphones have become ingrained in our daily routines. We spend most of our time with our cell phones buzzing around us, making it impossible to find peace of mind and spend meaningful time with our loved ones. So today I’m going to show you how to get rid of alerts and free up some time for yourself. Sometimes all you have to do is turn off the lights and do a digital detox. However, when you’re used to getting emails, text messages, and social media updates all day, this can be difficult.

Unfortunately, there is no simple “turn off” option to turn off notifications on all your devices. Every gadget, be it a smartphone or a PC, has its own method for turning off alerts.

It’s not difficult to disable alerts on your phone, computer or web browser, but it may take some time. That’s how it’s done.

How to disable notifications on your iPhone, iPad and Android device

on an iPhone

  • Open the Control Center and tap on the icon that looks like a crescent moon. This will activate Do Not Disturb until you tap it again.
  • If you press and hold your finger on the icon, you can temporarily activate Do Not Disturb.
  • You can also tap “Schedule” at the bottom of this menu to set up a recurring schedule for Do Not Disturb mode. This is great if you want to mute notifications at a certain time each day.

    • The best way to manage your iPhone notifications in the long run is to customize which apps send you notifications.

  • Open the Settings app and tap on “Notifications”.
  • You will see all your apps. Find and tap the app you want to turn off notifications for.
  • To disable all notifications for this app, tap the “Allow notifications” button at the top of the page. You can also use the options below to edit how you receive notifications – for example, you can just turn off sounds.

    You can turn off notifications on an iPad in exactly the same way as on an iPhone.

    Open Control Center and enable Do Not Disturb mode or go to Settings > Notifications and manage notifications for each app individually.

  • Open the Settings app and tap “Sounds”.
  • In the menu that opens, tap on “Do not disturb”.
  • You will be able to edit your settings, including which notifications, if any, can go through.

  • Open Settings and tap on “Notifications” and you will find a complete list of all your apps.
  • Tap the toggle button next to each app to turn off its notifications.
  • If you want to leave an app on but customize the type of notification it sends, tap “Advanced” in the top right corner and tap an app name to edit it.

    on a Mac

    To enable Do Not Disturb:

  • Click on the notifications icon at the top right of the screen – it looks like a bulleted list.
  • Select the “Notifications” tab and scroll up as high as you can.
  • Click the “Do Not Disturb” button to activate it for a day.

    • To edit notifications for each app:

  • Open System Preferences and click on “Notifications”.
  • In the left sidebar, you will see a list of apps that can send you notifications. Click on one.
  • To disable all notifications for this app, click the toggle button next to “Allow notifications.
  • You can also use the options below to edit how notifications are displayed.

    • on a computer

    To activate the Focus Assist:

  • Click the Action Center icon in the lower right corner of the screen. It looks like a square speech bubble.
  • In the menu that opens, click on “Focus assistance” to enable it. Clicking on it once will activate “Priority” mode, which means that only apps that have been given priority will be able to send notifications.
  • Double-clicking it will activate the “Alarms” mode, which will silence all notifications except the alarms you set with Cortana.

    • To permanently disable notifications for your apps:

  • Open the Start menu and search for “Notifications”.
  • Select “Notifications and Actions Settings” from the search results.
  • In the menu that opens, you can disable all notifications permanently by turning off the option “Get notifications from apps and other senders”.
  • Also make sure to disable “Show me the Windows welcome experience…” and “Get tips and tricks…” They are notifications straight from Windows, teaching how to use the system.
  • Below these options is a complete list of all your apps. Click the toggle button next to any app to turn off its notifications.

    • How to turn off your web browser notifications

    On Google Chrome

  • Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and then on “Settings”.
  • Scroll down and click on “Site Settings”. It’s under “Privacy and Security”.
  • Scroll down and select “Notifications”.
  • To turn off all your notifications, turn off the option next to “Sites may ask to send you notifications”. You can also select “Use quieter messages” for a pseudo-Do Not Disturb mode.
  • Below is a list of all websites that you have blocked or allowed specific notifications for. Click the arrow next to any site to edit its settings, including whether to receive notifications from it.

    • In Microsoft Edge

  • Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Settings”.
  • In the left sidebar, select “Site Permissions”.
  • Click on “Notifications”.
  • If you want to turn off all your notifications, turn off the “Ask before sending” option.
  • Below is a list of websites you have specifically blocked or allowed notifications from. Click on the three dots next to each one’s name to remove or block it.

    • in Firefox

  • Click on the three lines in the upper right corner and select “Preferences”.
  • Click on “Privacy and Security” and scroll down to “Permissions”.
  • Here, you will find a “Notifications” option. Click on “Settings…” next to it.
  • Check the “Block new requests asking permission from notifications” option. This will prevent future sites from trying to send you notifications.
  • If you have sites that you’ve requested notifications from, they will appear in the list above the checkbox. Click on one of these websites and click “Remove Website” or click “Remove All Websites” to get rid of them all at once.
