If iMovie or any other sophisticated video editing tool stuns you as a Mac user, there’s a simpler choice for video editing: QuickTime Player. QuickTime Player is a video and image player developed by Apple and installed by default on every Mac computer. It allows users to play, record, edit and share movies and photos. Cutting a movie with QuickTime Player is simple and lets you change the length of any video from start to finish. QuickTime Player comes pre-installed on your Mac computer, so there’s no need to download it (unless you’ve uninstalled it). Here it is how to use QuickTime Player to cut a movie.
How to cut a video on Mac using QuickTime Player
1. Launch QuickTime Player.
2. Once QuickTime starts, click “File” and then “Open File…” in the top menu bar. Select your video from its location on your Mac.
3. With the video open, select “Edit” from the top menu.
4. From the drop-down menu, select “Cut” or hold “command” + “T” on your keyboard.
5. A yellow clipping bar will appear around the duration of your video at the bottom. Drag the “handles” to cut out the parts you don’t want. Everything inside the yellow bars will remain.
6. After cropping your video, select “Crop” on the right. You can preview your video by selecting the play icon at any time during the editing process.
7. To save the finished movie, click “File” and then “Save…” in the top menu bar.
8. Name the cropped video, select where to save it on your computer, and click “Save”.
