How to Enable New Gmail User Interface – Guide
Google has made the integrated Chat, Rooms and Meet interface available for free account members. Jack Wallen demonstrates how to enable this greatly improved user interface and feature group. Google recently announced the debut of a unified Gmail and Chat interface for all users (not just those who pay for Google Workspace). Don’t get too excited, because that won’t allow all users of the free service to access all features.
The modification, on the other hand, improves Gmail’s interface and allows users to use the improved chat service. If you use Google Hangouts, the transition to chat will be smooth and you won’t miss a thing. Along with the transition from Hangouts to Chat, free users will be able to form chat rooms, hold video calls, and use Gmail’s sleeker interface with this integrated experience. Put another way, this is a move you want to make.
Change is hard, I understand. However, you should certainly take the time to familiarize yourself with a new UI this time around. You’ll see a split sidebar (on the left) where you can interact with Gmail, Chat, Rooms (group chat) and Meet (video calls).

The only thing you need to activate this new interface is a Google account. This account doesn’t have to be a paid Workspaces account, so if you’re working with the free version, you’re good to go.
