How to Enable YouTube’s iPhone picture-in-picture mode – Guide

Apple introduced picture-in-picture mode on iPhone with iOS 14 and iPad with iOS 13, but you wouldn’t know it if you were using the YouTube app. The feature has technically been around for almost a year, but was limited to premium subscribers before disappearing last week. This morning, the Google team’s YouTube account on Twitter appeared to confirm that the feature will actually be available “in a few days on all iOS 15+ devices”. The account did not specify whether it will continue to be premium feature, but it does not matter. A few hours later, the comment was clarified to say that the feature will not be available for the YouTube app, but for YouTube TV, which costs $65 a month.

Picture in Picture lets you switch to another app while watching a video. In apps that support it feature, like Safari, FaceTime and Chrome, you can swipe out of the app while a video is playing to minimize it to the bottom of the screen. The video overlays any other open apps and can be resized and moved to any corner of the screen. This feature would obviously be very useful for YouTube. Currently, you have to keep the app open on your screen to watch anything. As soon as you switch to another application or return to home screen, the video stops playing. If you really want to use the feature it looks like you will have to switch to an Android phone.

How to Activate YouTube iPhone picture-in-picture mode

Open your web browser and log in to YouTube with your account which is part of the YouTube Premium subscription.

Search for a video you want to watch.

Switch to full screen mode by tapping the square icon in the lower right corner of the video.

Tap the video to see the controls, then press the picture on the picture button on the upper left side next to the closure button. Alternatively, you can double tap the screen with two fingers or simply swipe up from the bottom of the device to activate picture-in-picture mode.

Once enabled, picture-in-picture mode allows you to move and work in any other application you like while continuously playing YouTube videos running in a small window.
