How to Find Nearby AirTags Using Android – Guide

AirTags differ from other Bluetooth trackers like Tile in that they rely on Apple’s U1 chip to provide full functionality. Functionality is limited on iPhones without the U1 chip and even more limited on non-Apple devices. You need an iPhone, iPad or Mac to set up AirTags as they require the Find My app which is only available for Apple devices. You also need an iPhone, iPad or Mac to put AirTags in lost mode or find your AirTags on a map, as both features require the Find My app.

Apple has released an Android app called Tracker Detect that tracks object trackers and works with Apple’s Find My network. However, this doesn’t happen automatically, you have to ask the app to detect trackers. AirTags are Apple’s answer to discreet tracking devices, as we’ve seen from companies like Tile, but with the added benefit of being able to use basically any modern Apple device to find tagged items.

While there is no Android tool that allows us to actually use Apple’s trackers, the company has released a useful Android app called Tracker Detect, which allows us to determine if there are any nearby. Here’s how it works.

How to Find AirTags Nearby Using Android

Apple’s Tracker Detect app lets you find nearby AirTags, but doesn’t automatically notify you if an AirTag is following you. You need to manually search for the Bluetooth tracker, wait 10 minutes to ensure the AirTag remains nearby, then play a sound to help locate the item.

Start by downloading Tracker Detect from the Play Store and open the app on your Android phone or tablet. On the first screen, press the “Scan” button button.

Your Android device will start looking for AirTags. After a few minutes, if there are any nearby, they will be listed on the Results page. Tap one of the unknown AirTags.

Now you will have to wait 10 minutes to make sure the AirTag is close to you and does not leave the general area. After these 10 minutes, you can select the “Play Sound” option button.

If the Tracker Detect app works as desired, it will connect to the AirTag and activate the tracker’s built-in Bluetooth speaker. You can use sound to help find hidden AirTag.
