The Apple Music skill for Amazon Alexa speakers has mysteriously gone away in the US and a few other places. Several 9to5Mac readers noticed today that asking their Echo to play Apple Music wasn’t working, and neither could they re-add the skill. It’s not clear if this is just a mistake or if it was done on purpose. Since the skill is still available in the UK and some other markets, it seems more like a bug. At the time of writing, we could not get official confirmation of the real cause.
The 404 page shows that the Apple Music skill is not available in the US right now. It also doesn’t show up when we look for new integrations in the Amazon Alexa store. When it was available, this feature let the Amazon Alexa smart assistant play playlists, radio stations, or albums from the user’s library through the linked Apple Music service.
In general, Apple has worked hard to bring Apple Music to third-party platforms, including competing smart assistants like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa (until the recent outage). Apple has also released Apple Music apps for Android, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku sticks. We have mentioned ways below to Fix Alexa Is Not Playing Apple Music.
Ways To Fix Alexa Is Not Playing Apple Music
Restarting your echo
- Switch off the Echo
- Unplug the Echo
- Leave the Echo alone for one minute
- Reconnect your device to the mains power supply
Check your echo settings
- Open Alexa
- Select devices
- Select Alexa and Echo
- Check the device’s location, time zone, and language.
- Match them with your current location
- Refresh everything and start over!
Set Prime as default music Provider
If you have set up more than one music provider in the Alexa app, you would need to add the service name to the music command if it isn’t the default one. If Prime is your default music service, you can just say, “Alexa, play Hey There Delilah,” and it will start playing on Prime Music. But if it isn’t the default and you use the same command, it will play it through the default music provider (if the song is available).
- Tap on the three-bar icon at the top of the Alexa app. Choose Settings from there.
- Click “Music.”
- Tap on Default Services and choose Amazon Music.
Turn Off Explicit Filtering
If you’re still having trouble playing Apple Music with Alexa, try turning off the explicit filtering feature in the Alexa app to see if that solves the problem. For some reason, some music services do not support explicit filtering and do not work when the feature is enabled.
- Open the Alexa app on your phone and tap the menu icon (it looks like three horizontal lines) in the upper left corner.
- Then select Settings.
- Select Music & Podcast and then Filter Explicit Speech.
- Turn off the feature.
Factory Reset Your Alexa Device
- In the Alexa app, go to Devices -> “Echo & Alexa”.
- Select your Echo speaker from the list.
- To access the device settings, press the gear icon in the upper right corner.
- Depending on whether you have an Echo Show or an Echo device without a screen, this step differs. Factory reset (Echo Show) or deregistration are the two options (all other Echos).
- Confirm your actions by answering the confirmation box. It is recommended that you read the warning message first.
- Connect Alexa to the WLAN and set up your Echo device in the same way as before.
Check and Update Alexa
Problems like these can occur if you are not using the latest version of the Alexa app and the Apple Music app. So the next troubleshooting step is to check and update both apps on your mobile device. If you’re using an iOS device, make sure to update to the latest iOS version and check the App Store for updates to the Alexa app. And if you’re using an Android device, check the Google Play Store for updates to the Amazon Alexa app and the Apple Music app.
- Open the Alexa app on your mobile device and tap the icon with three bars (it looks like horizontal lines) in the upper left corner.
- Tap Settings and select Music & Podcasts.
- Tap Select default music services. Next, select Apple Music, and then tap Done.
Unlink and Relink Apple Music
- Open the Alexa app on your mobile device and tap the three-bar icon (the three lines look like horizontal lines) in the upper left corner.
- Tap Settings and select Music & Podcasts.
- In the drop-down list, tap Apple Music and then tap Disable Skills.
