Whether it’s a Magic Mouse or a third-party Bluetooth, wireless or wired mouse, you are sure to encounter mouse problems at some point. Below are some tips and solutions to get the mouse working properly again on Mac. Apple offers two pointing devices: the Apple Magic Mouse and the Magic Trackpad.

There are two generations of Magic Mouse, which can be easily identified by the fact that the Magic Mouse 1 uses a removable battery and the Magic Mouse 2 has an internal battery that cannot be removed. At least not if you want a working mouse. While these mice are generally pretty foolproof, they can have annoying issues from time to time. If your Apple Mouse is not working, here are some possible solutions.

How to Fix the ‘Apple Magic Mouse is not working’ issue

Most fixes for an Apple mouse not working properly are simple. Try these solutions to get your mouse up and up and running in almost no time.

  • Replace the battery if you use a first-generation Magic Mouse and experience hesitant tracking behavior. The most likely reason is that the mouse batteries have lost contact with the battery terminals. The result is that the Magic Mouse and Mac momentarily lose Bluetooth connectivity. To see if the mouse has a battery connectivity issue, lift the Magic Mouse off the surface you are using it on. If the green power LED flashes, the batteries are probably loose. There are ways to fix these types of Magic Mouse disconnect issues.
  • Recharge your Magic Mouse 2’s internal battery. It doesn’t have the battery terminal problem because it doesn’t use standard AA batteries. Instead, Apple created a custom rechargeable battery for the second-gen mouse that you can’t access. Check the battery charge by clicking the Bluetooth icon in your Mac’s menu bar or in Mouse system preferences. If the charge is low, take a break and plug it in.
  • Clean the wireless mouse’s dirty optical sensor. If you have a Magic Mouse 2 or can rule out a battery issue on your first-gen Magic Mouse, the mouse may be bouncing or hesitating because debris or dirt is lodged in the mouse’s optical sensor. To fix this problem, turn the mouse over and use compressed air to remove the dirt. If you don’t have compressed air on hand, blow into the sensor opening. Before placing the mouse on the work surface, clean the mouse pad or the work area where you use Magic Mouse.
  • Change Magic Mouse speed or sensitivity. Go to System Preferences > Mouse > Point and Click. If the tracking speed slider is set to an extremely slow or extremely fast speed, adjust it to a speed that suits you best.
  • Delete a damaged preference file. The preference file your Mac uses to configure Magic Mouse when you first turn it on may be corrupt. Go to the Library folder on your Mac, locate the ~/Library/Preferences folder, and drag the following two files to the trash:
  • com.apple.AppleMultitouchMouse.plist
  • com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse.plist
  • When you restart your Mac, it recreates the default mouse preference files. Open System Preferences and reconfigure the mouse to suit your needs.
  • Seek professional help. If these fixes do not resolve the issue, you may have a hardware problem on your hands. Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar or take the mouse to an Apple Authorized Service Provider to have the mouse evaluated and, if possible, repaired.
