How to Fix ‘WhatsApp images, videos not showing in Phone Gallery’ Issue – Guide
WhatsApp is a fantastic way to communicate with friends and family via instant messaging. Among other things, it allows the exchange of documents, photos and videos. WhatsApp media, such as photos and videos, may not appear in the gallery for certain users for a variety of reasons. Don’t worry if you can’t see the images received by WhatsApp on your phone gallery. On Android and iPhone, here it is how to solve the problem of WhatsApp photos not being displayed up in the gallery.
Before you start, make sure you update WhatsApp to the latest version from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, depending on your device, so you don’t miss any features or getting stuck with bugs that cause problems.
Fix WhatsApp images not appearing in Android gallery
1. Enable media visibility on WhatsApp
The issue of WhatsApp photos not appearing in the gallery is often related to media visibility settings in WhatsApp. If media visibility is turned off, WhatsApp will hide all downloaded media from other gallery apps.
To enable media visibility on WhatsApp:
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and select Settings.
- Navigate to the Chats section.
- Move the toggle button next to Media Visibility to turn it on.
This will enable media visibility for all contacts. All WhatsApp images will now start to be displayed up in your gallery.
Unhide images of a specific WhatsApp contact
If the WhatsApp images are not showing up for a specific contact, or you want to specifically hide a specific contact’s photos in your gallery:
- Open the WhatsApp chat for the specific contact.
- Tap the contact’s name at the top.
- Click Media Visibility and select Yes to enable it.
- Otherwise, if you want to hide the pictures of that specific contact in the photo app, set it to No.
2. Delete the .NoMedia file
Alternatively, you can delete the .nomedia file from the WhatsApp folder to fix the problem. To begin with, the “.nomedia” file marks the folder as having no multimedia data. And therefore, files in that specific folder are not scanned or indexed by media players including the Gallery & Photos application.
- Open the File Manager app on your phone and go to your Settings.
- Here, enable the ‘Show hidden media files’ option.
- Now go to your internal storage phone and look for the WhatsApp folder. Open it and go to Media > WhatsApp Pictures.
- Delete the .nomedia file present here. Do the same for the Private and Sent folders, if necessary, and you’re done.
Delete .nomedia file on Android 11
On Android 10 and earlier, the WhatsApp folder used to be in the root folder. However, in phones running Android 11 and up, it was moved to Android > media directory.
So if you cannot find the WhatsApp folder, please follow the steps below:
- Open the file manager and click on the Android folder.
- Here, tap media> com.whatsapp.
- Now you will find the WhatsApp folder.
- Open it. Then click Media and Pictures from WhatsApp.
- Now you can find and delete the .nomedia file.
- Do the same for Private and Sent folders.
3. Copy the photos to a separate folder
Did the above steps not work? In that case, you can move the photos from WhatsApp folder to a different folder on your storage phone.
- Open the file manager on your phone.
- Look for the WhatsApp folder in the Internal Storage directory.
- Navigate to WhatsApp>Media>WhatsApp Images.
- Look for the images in the ‘WhatsApp Images’ folder and the ‘Private’ directory within it.
- Select the photos and copy them to a different folder on your storage phone.
You can create a separate folder on the internal storage and copy all photos into this folder. All WhatsApp photos will now start to be displayed in your phone gallery. Just make sure there is no “.nomedia” file in the new folder.
Fix WhatsApp images not appearing in gallery on iOS (iPhone / iPad)
1. Grant photo permissions to WhatsApp
WhatsApp won’t save photos to the iPhone gallery if you don’t have permission to access them in the privacy settings. Although rare, you may have accidentally tapped ‘Disallow’ when prompted or mistakenly disabled permission in Settings.
So be sure to check if it’s allowed, as described below.
- Navigate to Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Here, scroll down and go to the Privacy section.
- Click Photos and choose WhatsApp from the list of available apps.
- Change to All Photos, if not the default, and you’re ready to go.
2. Allow WhatsApp to save photos to Camera List
On iOS, WhatsApp images are not shown automatically up in the Photos app after downloading. Instead, you must manually save each photo to your camera scroll or activate Save to Camera Option to scroll in WhatsApp settings.
