Whenever a tech company uses the term “unlimited” for any of their services, take it with caution, especially when it comes to cloud storage. You can consider this change as an indication to send lots of photos and videos before the deadline. but the company changed the rules once, so you can’t be absolutely sure they won’t change them again. Nothing is set in stone forever. Fortunately, once you’ve uploaded all your photos and videos to Google Photos, you won’t lose any media you’ve already uploaded, and those files won’t count towards your free 15GB of storage or any other paid Google storage plan. While it looks like this image format may not have been high quality, Google claims that Storage Saver photos are still “the same great quality”. There’s good news for owners of Google’s Pixel smartphones, from the first to the latest Pixel 5. Photos from these devices don’t suffer from the restriction imposed on the rest of us. The problem is that unlimited storage only applies to photos uploaded in high quality (aka storage saver quality) which is 16 MP. Full resolution photos will continue to use their storage quota as before.

Steps to get unlimited Google Photos storage

Before starting the process, make sure you have more than one Google account with you. If that’s not the case, create a new Google Account. Once this is done, follow the instructions below.

On your Android device, open the Photos app.

Tap the three horizontally stacked lines present in the upper left corner to open the Menu.

Now tap on your currently logged in account. A drop-down list will appear. You need to add the Google Account you just created at the beginning. This will act as a proxy to get unlimited photo storage for free.

To do this, select the option Add another account from the menu.

At this stage, you will have to authenticate your device using your password or fingerprint. Once done, enter the email and password of the newly created account. Note: If you haven’t created a Google Account yet, you can do so now. Tap the Create Account option located in the lower left corner and follow the onscreen instructions.

Once you have successfully created/logged in with the newly created email, open the Photos app. Now go to the menu section and change your account to the newly created one.

Check the storage space of your Google Accounts

If you’ve added 4-5 Google Accounts on your device, you might want to keep a tab on the amount of storage space left on each of them. To do this, try the steps below. Make sure you are online, otherwise the process will not work.

In the Photos app, tap on the hamburger menu present in the upper left corner.

Switch to the account you want to check storage space for. You can do this by tapping your main account. Then, from the drop-down list, select the desired account.

Now, tap on Manage your Google Account.

Scroll down a bit until you reach the Account Storage section. There you can see the remaining storage space. However, if you want a very detailed analysis, tap on Manage Storage.

The Select an Account dialog will appear up. Select the desired account and press OK. You will now be taken to the Google One page where you can see how much storage space Gmail, Drive and Photos are consuming.

Likewise, if you want to verify any other account, tap on your avatar present in the upper right corner and select the desired account.
