How to Get Google TV on Android TV – Guide
While it’s not just a home screen replacement, Google TV debuted on the new Chromecast this week, and the biggest differences from Android TV are seen there. Here it is how to get Google TV home screen on an Android TV device if you like the new look. While sideloading the Google TV launcher APK on an Android TV device does nothing, with a little elbow grease you can get things up and running. As mentioned on Reddit, you will need to disable Android TV’s built-in launcher for the new Google TV home screen to take its place.
How to Knife
First, you will need the APK for “Google TV Home.” There are several ways to sideload this, but one of the easiest methods I’ve relied on is a simple app called “Send Files to TV” to transfer and then use FX File Explorer to actually run the installation.
At this point, you will need to install an ADB-supported computer.
Go to your Android TV device and look for Device Preferences in the Settings menu. Under About, scroll down to Build Version and press it repeatedly until Developer Options are enabled. At this point, go back to the Device Preferences menu and open Developer Options. Next, you will need to enable USB debugging and network debugging. Then go back to the Settings menu, go to Device Preferences, About and click Status to get your IP address.
Now, we are ready to run some commands.
First, we will need to connect to the device using “adb connect” and the IP address. After running this command, you will likely be prompted on your Android TV to allow your computer to connect.
Once connected and ready, we can disable the action launcher. Make sure the new Google TV home screen launcher is already installed at this point!
At this point, the Google TV home screen should be available. If you need to go back to the Android TV home screen, run the adjacent command. This will delete your Android TV home screen preferences but stop Google TV home to assume.
It should be noted, though, that switching to this new home screen isn’t perfect. Several aspects of the experience are broken, most notably the research. Still, the core experience works pretty much like it does on Chromecast. You can access your apps and watchlist, and the new home screen can be successfully pulled from your Play Movies library. Google TV is also technically US-exclusive, so you’ll likely have issues with the home screen on other devices.
Also, it’s important to remember that Google TV isn’t just a new home screen. There are major changes to the operating system as a whole that a quick initiator change will not replicate on older hardware. Most devices, however, must be updated.
