How to Have Alexa Count the Days to an Event – Guide

Are you looking forward to your birthday in a few weeks?! Alexa won’t let you forget. Ask your Echo device to set up a date, and will keep you informed of how many days are left for that event. Whether it’s a holiday, a retirement date, or even a birthday (for men), Alexa will help you remember. Alexa could be your favorite assistant for smart home control, but it can do much more.

Blueprints lets you create your own skill, like letting Alexa count the days until an event. Perhaps you are looking forward to the start of your trip, your wedding anniversary or an important anniversary. You don’t have to scour the Skill Store for a third-party tool. Just choose the How many days template, edit it and Alexa will tell you how many days are left.

How to Have Alexa count the days to an event

  • Open the Alexa app on your Android device, iPhone or iPad. Tap “More” on the bottom bar and you will see a list of options like Reminders, Routines and so on. Tap the “See More” option to expand this list and select “Plants”.
  • You will now need to locate the How many days blueprint. You can find it at Featured tab, but if not, tap the button Home or the All tab. When you find it, select it.
  • On the details screen, you can tap the Play icon at the top to hear a sample, review the steps to create the skill, read how to use it and see other useful ones tips.
  • When you’re ready to get started, tap on “Make Your Own” at the bottom.

    • Create and customize how many days

  • The first step is to create the event by typing its name. Then tap the date field, choose a date from the calendar and tap “OK”.
  • Optionally, you can check the “This is an annual event” box for things like birthdays and anniversaries.
  • you can set up the ability to include more than one event if desired. This is convenient if you want to enter the birthdays of several family members, for example. Tap “Add event” and follow the same steps.
  • Once you’re done adding events, tap “Next: Experience” at the top. You can then customize the skill.

    • Customize the skill

  • First, you can customize Alexa’s opening and closing messages. Then you can make Alexa say something like, “Great news! 15 days until Lucy’s birthday. You must be excited!” In this example, “Great news!” is the opening, and “You must be excited!” is the closing.
  • You will see several openings and closings already defined up for you. Tap the text to edit one, the “X” to remove one, or “Add opening/closing message” to create a new one. This offers a great way to customize the experience!
  • Then you can include a closing sound, and if you have an Echo Show or Echo Spot, you can add a background image.
  • Tap “Add Closing Sound” and then tap the drop-down list to select a category. From animals to the office to transportation, you’ll find a sound that fits the event. Choose the one you want and tap “Update Sound”.
  • If you can use a background image with your device, just select the color you want.
  • When you’re done customizing the skill, tap “Next: Name” at the top. Tap the text field and enter the name you want to use.
  • Tap “Next: Create Skill” at the top. You will see a brief message while your new skill is being saved with your customizations.
  • You should then see your skill details screen with some ways to ask Alexa for help.
  • So now, when you’re near the smart speaker, say things like “Alexa, how many days until Lucy’s birthday?”, “Alexa, when is Bailey’s birthday?” or “Alexa, open Dog Birthdays (your skill name).”
  • You also have actions at the bottom of the skill screen. Tap to Edit, Delete, Share, or Publish your skill. If you’re done, tap the “X” in the top right corner to close the crafting screen.
