How To See Mac’s Hidden Files – Guide

In fact, like other operating systems, Mac OS also hides some documents from users. As a general rule of thumb, this is sensible to prevent essential documents from being deleted and to prevent macOS from being damaged. In any case, from time to time you might have to see hidden documents, for example for troubleshooting reasons or you need to lock useless files on your Mac. Fortunately, you can easily view hidden documents on Mac and there are several strategies for do that.

Using Finder to View Hidden Files

  • Using ‘Finder’ is the easiest way to discover hidden files. To get started, click on the ‘Finder’ application in the Mac’s dock. Choose the ‘Macintosh HD folder’ under Places on the left side of the ‘Finder’ window. Then press ‘Command’ + ‘Shift’ + ‘.’ (the period key) at the same time. Grayed out files are files that are normally hidden.
  • You can perform the same steps on the ‘Documents’, ‘Applications’ and ‘Desktop’ folders. To hide the files again, press ‘Command’ + ‘Shift’ + ‘.’ (the period key) at the same time.

    • Viewing the ~ / Hidden Library folder

  • The hidden ‘~ / Library’ folder is located in the top menu of the ‘Finder’. This is where the main operating system files are stored on a Mac. To view them, go to ‘Finder’ and click ‘Go’ in the menu bar. Then hold down the ‘Option’ key on your keyboard. You will now see the hidden ‘~/Library’ listed as ‘Library’ in the ‘Go’ menu. Click on it to see the content.

    • Just uncheck the ‘Option’ key to hide the ‘~/Library’ folder again.

    Using Terminal to View Hidden Files

  • The ‘Terminal’ app allows you to get text-based access to hidden files. Both programmers and developers may want to follow these steps.
  • To use ‘Terminal’, click on ‘Finder’ in the dock. Then choose ‘Go’ from the menu bar and then ‘Utilities’. In the ‘Utilities’ folder, select ‘Terminal’.
  • Type the following into ‘Terminal’ and press the ‘Enter’ key:

    • defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles true

  • Then type the following in ‘Terminal’ and press ‘Enter’ on your keyboard:

    • Killall Finder

  • You can now view hidden and temporary files through the Mac file system. When finished, you should once again hide these files. To do this, use the following command and click ‘Enter’.

    • defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles false

  • Then type this command into the Finder, followed by the ‘Enter’ key:
