How to set up and call Household Contacts with Google Assistant – Guide
Every family has some mutual friends and family members that everyone is in contact with, whether parents, children, grandparents, uncles and aunts, cousins, family friends, etc. Currently, the only way to call these people is if they up Voice Match on the speaker/screen you are using and have saved that person’s details to your own contacts. Google is adding voice-activated speed dial feature to Google Assistant called Family Contacts. Anyone with a Google account for a smart speaker or smart display can call those people with a single voice request or tap on a smart display screen. Google also revealed the ability for Nest Hub Max owners to make group video calls with a request to Google Assistant through Google’s Duo and Meet. mobile applications.
The new group call feature expands this chat to multiple people at the same time. Per up group call, users need to group the desired contacts in Duo mobile application. After asking Google Assistant to make a group call, the list of user-created groups will appear on the screen and they can tap on the group they want to merge. Those who answer will appear on the call screen. Thanks to the smart screen’s auto-framing function, the first caller can be seen at all times while on the move.
Adding home contacts
If you have a smart screen
Owners of a Nest Hub, Hub Max, or other Assistant smart display should notice a new family contacts card on the device’s screen. Tapping it lets you see the people you’ve already added plus one button to select more. If you don’t see the card, try saying “Ok Google, set up domestic contacts”.
Choose the blue Add Home Contacts and you’ll see a list of all your Google Contacts (screen verifies that it’s you, the owner, matching your voice) with some relevant suggestions at the top. Select the ones you want to add and tap Done.
In Google Assistant settings
On Google Home app, tap your account avatar in the top right > Assistant Settings > You (first tab) > Your people. This is where you can usually add a bunch of people you contact frequently and assign nicknames to them to reach them faster. If you don’t have anyone set up further, you can add person, or tap any existing contact and fill in the details. Among them is a new home contact toggle that you can turn on for anyone who wants to add to their smart display and speaker as a speed dial option. When someone is added, an indicator shows up next to your name in the main list.
There should also be a specific interface for home contacts, but we haven’t been able to trigger it very reliably. (snapped up after a freebie message suggested on Google Home app, and also when our informant clicked Can’t find someone? on your smart display by configuring it up.) It doesn’t offer anything inherently different, so you don’t have to worry about not finding it.
How to call these contacts
On smart screens, you can simply tap the person’s name on the family contact card (as seen at the top of this post) and you’ll be given the options to initiate a voice or video call with them. On the speakers, just say “Ok Google, call [contact name or nickname]” and the call should go through. This should also work on monitors if you prefer to skip the card.
